There were 47 Engineering colleges in Karnataka. The large number of Engineering Institutes institutions in Karnataka attracts students not only from the other parts of India but also from foreign countries. CET at State level is conducted for admission to Engineering Colleges. Specified number of seats as notified from time to time in private/aided, unaided Engineering Colleges are left to be filled at the discretion of the college management.

Govt of India nominates 25 seats, Students sponsored by tamilNadu or kerala govt on reciprocal basis 5/3 seats, Physically handicapped 10 seats, NCC cadets having 'B' certificate 35 seats, Sportsmen/Women 40 seats ,Scouts/Guides, 33seats for freedom fighters,35 seats for De fence Personnel,and 35 for Ex-Serviceman. There are also reservation for the SC,ST and backward community in Karnataka colleges.

Karnatakas engineering colleges are likely to see several thousand seats go vacant again this year. To find an early solution to the annual CET trauma, the Karnataka government had to settle for a cut in its share of seats in all streams - engineering, medical and dental year 2007. Engineering students in Karnataka will now handle e-governance initiatives of the state government.

Some colleges of Karnataka provide free engineering course to poor students. Students with 75 per cent marks will be given free seats in the engineering Colleges in Karnataka. The government stop giving licenses to new engineering colleges, and provide more facilities to the existing colleges instead.
