Cantabria is an autonomous community of northern Spain with a coastline that overlooks the Cantabria Sea. The region is bordered by the Basque Country to the east, Castilla Leon to the south, and Asturias to the west. Cantabria has much to offer visitors to the region with a mixture of mountainous massifs, rolling lush meadows and picturesque fishing ports. Santander is the region's capital and is the best place to start any venture around the province as most places can easily be reached within a 3-hour car drive
Santander, capital of Cantabria
Santander is a modern commercial city and one of Spain's main ports of arrival for ferry passengers from Britain. In 1941, Santander fell victim to a great fire, which burned for 2 days fanned by strong southerly winds. Only one person was killed while the city was plunged into chaos and much of the historic centre was destroyed. The oldest remaining building to be found in Santander today is the cathedral.
Cantabria Holiday Attractions
Much of the tourism that comes to the region head towards the summer holiday resorts to be found along the northern coastal strip. El Sardinero near Santander is one of the most popular beaches for visitors to the capital city. It can get busy along its 1.3km length during the summer months, but the wide promenade, which is one of the prettiest in Spain, runs the whole length of the beach and there is a good supply of hotels and eateries to choose from. At one end of the beach can be found Magdalena Park, which offers a beach playground, mini zoo and train circuit. The town of Comillas has a picturesque sandy beach with plenty of parking nearby and a fishing port at one end. The beach at Laredo is over 4km long and has fine golden sand overlooked by a long promenade. It also offers good conditions and lifeguard facilities for those interested in surfing.
Cantabria National Parks
Cantabria has many national parks for those interested in the flora and fauna Spain has to offer. The Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa was the first Spanish national park to receive this classification in 1935. The Picos de Europa Mountains are spread over the three provinces Asturias, Leon and Catalonia and contain 3 massifs characterised by constant rainfall and often snowfall on the peaks. The Nature Reserve offers some fantastic extremes of landscape including vertical drops of over 2km, hillside forests of oak, beech, maple and walnut trees, meadows of green pasture land and the great Covadonga lakes.
This northern region of Spain is a great destination for discovering some of the natural delights of this diverse country. Beautiful beaches and dramatic sheer cliff faces dominate the coastline, while the Picos de Europa can be found just 25km from the coast. Cantabria has a good selection of Nature Reserves both within the mountainous areas and along its northern coastal stretch. With fantastic scenery and a wonderful diverse range of flora and fauna, these offer some excellent walking and hiking opportunities for visitors who want to experience the more rugged side of Spain.
Tourist Attractions In America
Located on the Southern Costa Blanca coastline is the popular and delightful seaside resort of Cabo Roig. Well loved for its superb sandy “blue flag" beaches, its stunning views of the sparkling blue Mediterranean sea, its picturesque cliff walks and its busy nightlife, Cabo Roig has plenty to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Generally quiet during the winter months, Cabo Roig comes to life around May time and is often busy right through to November. Cabo Roig attracts holidaymakers from all over the world but primarily English, Irish and Spanish (particularly those from the city of Murcia who love this stretch of the coast). The busiest months are July and August, the quietest January and February.
The eye-catching 16th century watchtower, around which Cabo Roig originally grew, is now part of a restaurant complex which overlooks the recently modernised marina. An estimated 2 million euros was spent on the refurbishment of what is now one of the Costa Blanca’s most desirable mooring spots.
One of the main attractions of Cabo Roig is its wonderful sandy beaches. Most of the beaches along this stretch of the Costa Blanca coastline are very clean and most have “blue flag" status, Cabo Roig is no exception and its 2 main beaches (Cala Capitan and Cala Caleta) are clean and safe for children. Also within easy walking distance are the beaches at La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Campoamor.
Be sure to try out the well known cliff walk which runs from Cala Caleta beach to La Zenia beach, this is an ideal way to spend an evening during the bright summer months and will provide a very welcome cooling breeze on those hot muggy days. The walk offers some picturesque views of the sea and coastline and there are some interesting coves to explore along the way.
On a visit to Cabo Roig you can generally expect fine weather, this part of the Costa Blanca coastline enjoys its own micro-climate and is generally recognised as being one of the healthiest places in the world to live. Cabo Roig is blessed with in excess of 300 sunny days every year, and enjoys an average temperature of 20 degrees centigrade. Rainfall is scarce and mostly falls during the winter months, but don’t be surprised to see a heavy downfall in late August or early September, when, after many months of hot sunny weather, the odd thunderstorm is not unusual. Temperatures during the summer months can reach 40 degrees centigrade but usually Cabo Roig enjoys a cooling sea breeze.
For your evening entertainment you will probably want to head for the popular Cabo Roig “strip" (also known as Aguamarina Strip), here you will find a mind-boggling variety of bars and restaurants offering plenty of entertainment and culinary delights. There are also an increasing number of shops opening up although the strip is still missing a big supermarket.
For those who get bored with just sitting in the sun there are lots of other activities to enjoy in and around Cabo Roig. The Saturday market at Playa Flamenca is always popular with the ladies and if they can’t find any bargains here then a trip to the massive Friday market in Torrevieja may be just what is needed. Torrevieja has lots of other attractions including the Aqua Splash park (Aquopolis), the wonderful promenade with its huge array of restaurants and ice-cream parlours, the craft market (held every day), the fun fair (great for the kids) and the new Habaneras shopping centre.
So this is Cabo Roig “the jewel of the Costa Blanca", a perfect spot to re-locate, an ideal destination for a family holiday or just a nice place for a short visit.
Cabo Roig is easily reached by way of the N-332 coastal road (Cartagena to Alicante) or from the AP-7 motorway junctions 768 or 763. The closest airport is Murcia (San Javier) which is approximately 20 minutes drive away.
