Business owners who have been marketing online for any length of time know that it is crucial to their success to drive traffic to their website. It is not the website that you are marketing in and of itself. Rather, it is the product or service contained in that site that you need to market. You could have the greatest product or service available in the world on your site, but if no one knows about it, it is not going to do either you or them any good. For your business to prosper, you need to generate traffic to your site. Furthermore, the incoming traffic needs to be highly targeted. This means that visitors to your site need to be in search of the product or service that you are marketing.



Fortunately, today's entrepreneurs have endless Internet marketing tools available to generate traffic to their websites.

One of the most popular and most effective is Google Adwords. Just in case you aren't familiar with Google, it is the most popular search engine on the web with somewhere in the range of 200 million searches per day. For this reason, it is to the web owner's benefit to achieve the highest possible page rank in the search engine. The higher your website page rank, the more traffic you are likely to receive.

The search engine result page is a prime place for advertisers to promote a product or service through ads and links. Google invented AdWords for online businesses to advertise their products and services to a highly targeted client base. AdWords can give you instant traffic to your website. You can see the relevant text advertisements on the Google search engine results page in a "sponsored links" area." Whenever someone searches for a particular keyword, these links appear in a separate part of the page that gives great exposure to the websites listed.

One major thing that you need to be on top of is monitoring your ad budget. There is a cost per click charge and you can set a max daily limit to control your budget. You will save a lot of money by keeping a close eye on your ad campaign.

Using Google AdWords is fairly easy to do. It will take some fine tuning to create just the right ad campaign. However, once you find it, your business will be flooded with highly qualified, targeted traffic.

Design a good web site:

This is a key element in getting return traffic. The web site should be easy to navigate; also provide the visitor with the information he or she wants. Browsing the web site should be a pleasant experience and the required information should be found easily within a few clicks.

An interesting way to increase return traffic is by asking people if they want to be informed about updates or by taking their feedback. You could also send out thank you notices for order purchases or conduct discussions with your visitors at your web site. Ask yourself if your web site provides complete information that a visitor needs? If your web site does not provide him with complete information then you risk losing them as they might opt for a competitor service

Your web site must be kept up to date. If description about a new product or service is added to your web site then make sure to provide a link back to the products page. Try to check your content and see if extra pages can be added to make it more informative. Analyze every aspect of your web site. Look at your site from the point of view of the visitor and ask questions like would I buy from this site or would I return to this site? A few principles to follow:

Email Marketing:

This is a more active method of encouraging return traffic and can be very effective when used properly. However spamming (including mass e-mail campaigns, pop up windows and using unrelated keywords which make the site come up in searches) must be avoided completely. The use of Spam blockers is increasing everyday and there are increasing chances that your email is likely to go unread.

You could ask the customer to fill out a form on whether he is interested in joining your mailing list and what information he would like to receive in the future. Visitors could also be given the company's phone number, which could be another channel for obtaining information.
