For now though, we have five months unbroken sport to look forward to, and its already hotting up nicely.At Ascot on 18th November, a dear old friend of mine, Hardy Eustace (or Hardly Useless as I affectionately know him) made his seasonal hurdling bow, and annihilated a good field. He didn't come off the bridle and had a decent sort (and good yardstick) in Mighty Man travailing desperately in behind. He looks better than ever, but isn't getting any younger.Over the Irish Sea the following day, and it was Brave Inca's turn to debut for the season. The reigning Champion Hurdler was the first to come under pressure in a muddling race, but rallied bravely. He was no match however for another impressive seasonal debutant, Iktitaf. Iktitaf was patiently campaigned last year, swerving both Cheltenham and Aintree, before demolishing Straw Bear at Punchestown in their big April festival. He is already four from four this season and, if he gets a break before the Spring, might be the one they have to beat. One thing's for certain: if all these beasts turn up fit and well at Cheltenham on the second Tuesday in March, we are in for probably the best Champion Hurdle ever!Elsewhere, and last weekend saw the Hennessy Gold Cup staged at Newbury. It was the 50th running, which constitutes the longest unbroken sponsorship of any sporting event in Europe. The winner was ,,,,,,On the TrainerTrackStats selections front, things have improved well since our last newsletter, with winners tipped right here at 14/1, 5/1, 11/4 and 5/6 from seven qualifiers. This is such a simple angle that we all really have no excuse for not checking those last races on the card! ---------------------- THE TTS JOKE.......----------------------A bit of an Americanism this time, and a bit coarser too (coincidence?!), but amusing to me at least....[For those who don't know, you can bet a horse to finish 3rd in the US, and that bet is called a 'show'.]A Preacher wanted to raise money for his church and, being told there were fortunes in race horses, he decided to purchase one and enter it in the races. However, at the local auction, the going price for horses was so steep he ended up buying a donkey instead. He figured that since he had it, he might as well go ahead and enter it in the races, and to his surprise the donkey came in third. The next day the racing sheets carried the headlines, "Preacher's Ass shows".The Preacher was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the races again and this time he won! The papers said, "Preacher's Ass out in Front".The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the Preacher not to enter the donkey in another race. The newspaper printed this headline, "Bishop Scratches Preacher's Ass".This was just too much for the Bishop and he ordered the Preacher to get rid of the animal. The Preacher decided to give it to a Nun in a nearby convent. The headlines the next day read, "Nun has the Best Ass in Town".The Bishop fainted. He informed the Nun that she would have to dispose of the donkey and she finally found a farmer who was willing to buy it for $10.00.
