There are numerous types of these fiberglass columns, each having their own unique feature which distinguishes them from one another. The two broadest classification of these fiberglass columns are the Greek and Roman columns. They are named as such because these columns actually originated from these civilizations. These civilizations make use of the columns as foundations of their temples and other significant structures. In simpler terms, these columns symbolize supremacy and elegance that is why up to this time, people are still enchanted and awed at the sight of these architectural panoramas.

There are basically three types of Greek columns the Doric, Ionic and the Corinthian columns. Each of these columns has their own distinctive feature in terms of their apex, base and width of column. These columns served as foundations and support for their temples and one living example of their column supported edifice is the Parthenon at Athens, Greece.

Doric columns, the oldest known of all, are the simplest type of columns. The top of the column is made of a bowl-shaped capital whose purpose is to support the structure above. Ionic column is obviously distinct from a Doric column because it has an ornamented top carved with a scroll on all corners of the supported part of the column. Corinthian columns are the most embellished among all three types of Greek columns. Aside from the carved scrolls on top of it, there are also carved flowers and acanthus leaves even in its slender body. The Corinthian column commenced the use of columns as decorative elements.

The Romans, whose culture is known to be adopted from Greek traditions and cultures, also have their own column designs. They, too, have the Doric, ionic and Corinthian varieties, only that they added two more kinds- the Tuscan and the composite column.

The Tuscan column is the simplest type of column resembling the characteristics of a Doric column only that it does not have a base and a bowl shaped capital. The composite column is designed out of a combined ionic and Corinthian carvings extending until its base. The Doric, Ionic and Corinthian designs are similar to their Greek counterpart but there are some deviations like for the roman Doric, the shafts are fluted; for the roman ionic, there are more ornate than Greek ionic and for the Roman Corinthian, the carvings are more detailed and ornate.

Columns indeed serve great purposes for a certain structure. It not only augments the bearing capacity of a building but also adds more aesthetic effect to the structure.
