You are not alone. With concerns about contaminated and over-chlorinated drinking water at an all time high, home reverse osmosis systems have become quite popular with consumers.Â
But what you may not know is that there are several good reasons why you won't find health through reverse osmosis. And companies marketing these drinking water systems as "state of the art" aren't giving you the whole story.Â
It's true that reverse osmosis produces "pure" drinking water that tastes good. But you need to know that there is more to drinking water than just purity. Drinking water is also a natural means for humans to get essential minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium. These minerals help our bodies work well and stay healthy. These vital minerals are removed through reverse osmosis!Â
Drinking water that's been stripped of these important minerals has two negative side effects. Â
First, demineralized water is acidic. When our bodies take in an acidic substance, it becomes necessary to neutralize the acid. Acid is neutralized by minerals. So, unfortunately, the body's only choice is to pull minerals from its available sources: our teeth and bones. Weak teeth are vulnerable to decay and weak bones break more easily.
Second, the production of free radicals increases when the fluids in our bodies are more acidic. More free radical production can lead to a rise in the potential to develop cancer.Â
In addition to the problem of demineralizing the water, reverse osmosis systems are not capable of filtering out SOCs (synthetic organic chemicals). This is because the size of the molecules that make up the synthetic chemicals is so small they are able pass through the filtering process. The result is a glass full of chemicals.   Â
Another drawback to home reverse osmosis systems is that they are usually installed in the kitchen where only the cooking and drinking water get treated. So the remaining faucets in your home, including the bath and shower will continue to dispense chlorinated and contaminated water.  Â
As a result, any health through reverse osmosis you may get from the water in the kitchen will be cancelled by the water coming from the faucets in the rest of the house.Â
So if a home reverse osmosis system isn't the answer to your water purification needs, what is'Â Well, you could look into a whole house water filter system, which can be an affordable and convenient alternative.Â
A whole house water filter system uses a multistage filtration system which passes water through multiple stages of filtration to remove chlorine, bad taste and odor.
A quality system will also be effective at removing almost all synthetic chemicals (e.g. alachlor, benzene, atrazine, etc.) intestinal parasites, such as cryptosporidium, giardia, and VOCs (volatile organic chemicals). Â
And since this water filtration system is connected to the main water line in your home, you will be getting clean, healthy water out of every faucet and appliance that delivers water. Â
You want to approach the purchase of a whole house water filter system like any good consumer. This means taking the time to do some research.Â
Don't buy the first water filtration system you see. Make comparisons. Look for certifications, product reviews and testimonials. I'm sure you'll discover that the good water filtration systems will rise to the top while the bad ones will sink like stones. Â
Make no mistake about it. You are definitely on the right track by looking for health through reverse osmosis. But now that you know the drawbacks to installing home reverse osmosis systems, don't let it stop you from continuing on your mission to find good health through better drinking water. After all, when it comes to the health of you and your family, nothing is more important.
Under Sink Reverse Osmosis
The companies that sell home reverse osmosis systems seem to think so. But there are so many disadvantages, and unless you have a specific problem with your water supply, there is no reason to invest in these expensive systems. Plus, you should always remember that home reverse osmosis systems alone won't make your water safe to drink.
First, let's look at what home reverse osmosis systems can do.
They can remove things that are heavier or larger than a water molecule. That may sound pretty small, but when you think about it, chemical contaminants are dissolved within the structure of our water. They are not heavier or larger; they are more or less "attached" to the molecules.
So, that's one reason that you cannot achieve better health through reverse osmosis.
And here's another:
All groundwater has a naturally occurring mineral content. These trace minerals and natural elements are needed by your body to maintain bone structure, improve joint function, to maintain a regular heartbeat, and for many other purposes.
Minerals are heavier, so home reverse osmosis systems will remove them. So, what you get tastes stale and isn't even good for you. Studies have shown that drinking distilled water, which also has no mineral content, is bad for your digestion and leads to nutritional deficiencies.
So, that's two reasons that there is no good health through reverse osmosis. Ready for the next one?
Bacteria, parasites, protozoa, viruses, fungi and other microscopic organisms are not trapped by home reverse osmosis systems. Any reputable company will advise you that some method of disinfection must be used before the water can be considered safe to drink. They suggest that you use chlorine.
What they don't tell you is that drinking chlorinated water causes digestive problems and in the long-term may lead to cancer or heart issues. They also fail to mention that when chlorine reacts with biological material (bacteria, etc.), dangerous by-products called THMs are formed.
THMs - trihalomethanes - are hazardous and are classified as known carcinogens. Home reverse osmosis systems do not trap THMs, cannot remove the chlorine, and do not remove bacterial contaminants that cause waterborne illnesses.
So, that's actually three more reasons that idea of health through reverse osmosis treatment is a falsehood. The only good thing that home reverse osmosis systems can do is desalinate. The big desalination plants use them as one step in their treatment plan. Large facilities all over the country use them as one step towards better water quality.
Over 2,000 different chemicals have been found in groundwater, reservoirs, and flowing through the taps all over this country. Many of them are cancer-causing agents. Drugs and hormones have been found by treatment facilities after water is termed "safe" to drink.
Home reverse osmosis systems can remove none of these things.
So, when you think about everything that contaminates our water, and you realize that the expensive reverse osmosis system will not remove them, then you can see that there are multitudes of reasons that you cannot achieve better health through reverse osmosis. There are wiser home water filtration choices for your family.
