Subhash Chandra Bose's intrepid warriors first unfurled the Indian flag here in 1944, ensuring Moirang a permanent spot in history. The INA Museum preserves the moment for posterity. The hot seat of Manipuri folk culture and craft (such as the wood-carvings), Moirang is also the location of an ancient temple of the pre-Hindu deity, Lord Thangjing. In May, men and women in traditional garb present dances in honour of the Lord. It is in Moirang too that the graceful Khamba Thoibi dance originated, celebrated in May. The ritual dance festival of Lai Haraoba is held annually. Fly to Imphal from Kolkata, and then hop on to one of the many buses that ply between Imphal and Moirang (45km) or hire a cab. Stay at the quite comfortable Tourist Lodge.
Rainwear: -
Protection against the northeastern rain comes in a wide variety, and often features dyed wool and feathers. The Miri tribals of Arunachal and Assam wear these beautiful rain shields.
Neermahal
The only lake palace in the Northeast, Neermahal was a royal summer resort. It stands in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, about 53km from Agartala (bus to Melaghar, then rickshaw). The combination of Hindu and Mughal architectures is interesting, and there is a sound and light show. Birdwatchers will find the bird life on the lake interesting. The palace is floodlit at night and there are plans to renovate the palace and add a museum. Stay at the Sagarmahal tourist Lodge ($ 60-400).
Jewellery: -
Apatani women wear seed bead and red white-heart bead necklaces. The Konyak tribals have a large variety of Jewellery worn by both men and women. In addition to metals, they use bone and ivory
.
Kaina
The dance form known as Manipuri-refined, delicate and very chaste-remains the most intimately religious of the country's important classical dance styles. It's still performed at temples. But everyone knows you can go to Imphal, capital city of Manipur and seat of the Northeast's Hindu high-culture, to watch a performance. Don't take those tired steps. Much more special: witnessing the moving spirit at the sacred spot of Kaina (29 km from Imphal), in a temple set on a hillock.
