University Study Abroad Programs

    View:
Trying to find an ideal study abroad programcan be overwhelming for anyone. There are so many things to consider, such aswhich country you want to study in, where you want to live while you are there, whether it is in a city or smaller town, and what personal goals you want tomeet while abroad. Most of us can agree that studying abroad is a formative andenriching experience, whether you are a high school student or a retiree, butactually finding a program that suits your individual needs can be challenging.

As a college student, I decided Iwanted to go abroad to improve my fluency in the Italian, which I've beentaking for a few years, but haven't noticed a big improvement in mycomprehension. My college has very limited options for study abroad programs, and none of them seemed to fit my interests or goals. I asked a few of myfriends, who go to different colleges, about their study abroad experiences, and one of them responded that he found a website called Activa Languages thathad done the research for him already. He told me about this amazing program hefound on the website, which combined improving his fluency in Spanish and scubadiving. He lived with his professor, so he was totally immersed in the languageand got the opportunity to go scuba diving a few times a week! When he gotback, he was completely fluent.

I looked at  as soon as I could. I couldn't believe thediversity of the programs. Even colleges that have great study abroad optionshave no where near the amount of programs on the website. Plus, ActivaLanguages only offers programs at accredited institutions, so you don't have toworry about the quality of your experience. Their prices are the same as theywould be if you signed up yourself, but they offer personalized advice too. When I called to sign up for a program in Tuscany, they answered all myquestions, and made me really look forward to going abroad, instead of feelinganxious or nervous about the process. I'm so excited about my study abroadprogram!
University Study Abroad Programs
If you have always dreamed of visiting various places and meeting different people, you have to become aware that Study Abroad can be the right decision for you. You can even try to learn a new language thanks to the existing programs that deal with students learning abroad. You can choose to experience the chance of learning outside your country and you will meet new customs, music, art and even politics. You will also gain some self confidence and you will learn how to stand up for yourself. You will learn how to express your own beliefs in a foreign country and language. Living away from your home can also transform you into a well adjusted person; you will learn how to face the transition to adulthood and college. Every Study Abroad Program may develop genuine interests in foreign languages; improving your present language skills stands for better chances for a job interview.

But you have to think whether you are a good candidate for Study Abroad or not. Many programs are likely to have academic requirements that can prevent you from going to study abroad. Your grades may not be enough in order for you to attend such programs. But you have to take advantage of the fact that many programs are not likely to have specific language requirements. Your academic record is another important feature because the programs are trying to involve students who are self-assured and independent in order to make them enjoy the future new experiences. The students have to be able to handle all the possible challenges that could come along because, when studying in foreign countries, you are likely to be faced with different new circumstances, predicaments and environments.

Every student must ask himself/herself if he/she is fitted for a Study Abroad Program; the student has to make sure that he is willing to experience new things that can turn out to be quite unpleasant sometimes. The student should also feel comfortable with his own decisions because every possible conflict has to be handled in a positive manner; he has to be ready to take some risks in order to be able to cope with complex and difficult situations. If you really hate changing your home and language for a period of time, you should drop your decision of studying abroad because this type of program is not likely to suit you too well. Anxiety should never find its place into your decisions.

The first step to be made is to apply to an already existing program; specific application procedures are likely to vary from one program to another. You will also have to answer some questions regarding your past experiences and obstacles that you have encountered during your entire life. You have to show that you have learned something from all the hard experiences and you may be even asked to write a sort of introductory letter in order to convince your potential host family. School and personal references must be provided together with heath information and practices; you will also have to go through several interviews with different sponsoring organizations and schools.

You have to know how to pitch the idea to your parents because they are likely to be pretty stubborn on not letting you use a Study Abroad Program. They have to understand the fact that this opportunity is highly important for your future career; they have to realize that studying abroad is to be regarded as a genuine chance of your lifetime. The great academic opportunities that are being offered must not be missed; gaining experience may be another strong point in your argument but you have to be aware that you must be very convincing in order to get what you want. The parents should not be worried that you are going to miss an entire school year because almost every program has its own responses to this problem. Every abroad student will be well supervised; the only thing that a student must do is to choose the program that fits his academic needs. The rest will come along because these programs are very well designed in order to meet every student's expectations. The student has to choose the Study Abroad Program carefully in order to take advantage of all its academic benefits.
