Sinusitis is an ailment that affects close to 37 million Americans each year. It is a condition which refers to an inflammation of the sinuses, the airspaces within the bones of the face. Sinusitis usually develops because of an infection within these spaces. It is normal for the sinuses to be filled with air. However, a person experiences discomfort once an infection sets in due to the presence of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and fluids in the sinus linings. Having sinusitis is very uncomfortable that is why it is important to seek medical attention early on before the condition worsens. In general, sinusitis starts with an infection caused by viruses or bacteria, or a combination of both. Viral sinusitis often occurs in individuals with the common cold because their sinuses are inflamed and are prone to viruses. Bacterial sinusitis, on the other hand, develops when bacteria becomes trapped inside the sinuses. This happens when the common cold or allergies with nasal congestion does not allow the sinuses to become properly drained. Individuals with bacterial sinusitis experience more facial pain, swelling, and fever than someone with viral sinusitis.

Some of the signs that indicate bacterial sinusitis may include the following:

stuffy or runny nose with a daytime cough that lasts for 10 to 14 days or longer without improvement

mucus discharge from the nose (this condition may occur in both viral and bacterial sinusitis but continuous thick discharge is more likely to be caused by bacterial infection.

persistent dull pain or swelling around the eyes

tenderness or pain in or around the cheekbones

feeling of pressure in the head

headache upon waking up in the morning or when bending

bad breath, even after brushing

pain in the upper teeth

fever greater than 100 degrees Fahreneheit or 39 degrees Celsius

With the right self-care techniques, sinusitis usually subsides without medication. However, individuals who want to hasten recovery may use medications like no prescription amoxicillin, over-the-counter drugs, and other prescription drugs. In addition to these drugs, ibuprofen or acetaminophen may also be taken to relieve the pain that is associated with sinusitis. These drugs should only be taken when approved by doctors to lessen the development of side effects, allergies, drug interactions, and many more. These drugs should be taken with sufficient rest and fluids so the body's immune system can work along these medication and fight the infection.

Preventive measures like avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke and alcohol is essential in impeding the development of sinusitis. Alcohol may worsen the swelling of the lining of the sinuses while cigarette smoke contains irritants that aggravate the sinus infection. It is also important to avoid deep dives in swimming pools. Sinusitis sufferers must use a humidifier during winter.

Dry nasal passages may crack, allowing bacteria to enter. When allergies are diagnosed, a number of nasal sprays are available to try to prevent inflammation within the nasal passageways, thus allowing the normal flow of mucus. Understanding the causes of ailments like sinusitis is essential and preventing further damage to the nasal cavity.

Aside from taking over-the-counter or prescription drugs, health professionals also suggest other alternatives for the treatment of the said condition. These alternatives include the avoidance of foods that might trigger an allergic reaction, acupuncture, and herbal medicines specifically concocted for the management of sinus conditions.
