What is happening to our society that teenagers are becoming so violent, disrespectful and promiscuous? Adults in every generation always complained about their youth, but today we’re facing an extremely serious problem. There have always been disruptive and out of control teenagers with bad behavior, but they knew right from wrong. Many of today’s kids don’t seem to know or care to know right from wrong. Teenagers today not only wear indecent clothes, listen to wild music and are sexually active; they also rob, destroy private property and kill with no compassion or remorse.
And the mass media is not helping either. Movies and television today expose a very unrealistic view of actions and their consequences. They don’t care to make any distinction between right or wrong. Nobody dares to express any judgment; everything is a matter of preference or opinion.
As parents we’re having less influence on our children than the world around them. However, we can only blame the negative effects of today’s culture only to the degree of exposure to these sources we allow our kids to have. Maybe we’ve become too lazy to monitor their everyday activities. Let’s not forget that our role as parents is to love, teach, guide, protect, supervise and set limits.
