Soon health insurance mental health parity will become law in the United States. Both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives passed bills that will require health insurance companies to provide equal coverage for mental and physical health conditions, reported The New York Times.
Mental health parity is a unit of an alternative fuels, energy conservation and renewable energy bill in the Senate. Group health insurance plans will be required to cover mental condition treatments the same as physical treatments, in the mental health provision.
A stand alone mental health bill in the House was approved 376- to 47, this bill applies to all health insurance. In the Senate, the energy bill that includes the mental health parity provision was approved 93 to 2.
One single mental health bill is expected to be sent to the president's desk, by the Senate and the House, says the Times article. The White House, mental health advocates, health insurance companies and both Chambers of Congress all support these mental health bills in unison.
"No longer will people with mental illness have their mental health coverage treated differently than their coverage for other illnesses like cancer, heart disease and diabetes," said U.S. Senator Pete Domenici from New Mexico.
