Family Ski & Snowboard
Rodger Smith
But there is one holiday that always seems to get the tick of approval, a family snow holiday.
Here are 6 tips from a seasoned family snow enthusiast, that will hopefully bring you back you after year.
1) Stay In Apartment or Condominium
Probably the biggest and most important decision facing a family going on their first snow holiday is where to stay. Ski resorts often offer a huge selection of accommodation options and picking the wrong option can ruin a holiday faster than no other.
From my and my family friends experience the best, cheapest and most comfortable option for families are to stay in an apartments or condominiums. Sometimes mothers object to staying in apartments believing that she will be left doing all the cooking and cleaning but this does not to have to be. You can just as easily eat out from an apartment as a hotel with added option of ordering in if you prefer.
What really makes staying in an apartment better for families is the extra space, giving everyone the chance to find a quiet area away, particularly important if you have teenagers.
2) What to Bring on a Family Snow Holiday
Obviously, you need bring lots of your warmest clothes the more water proof the better but also make sure you bring lots of clothes that you can wear as layers underneath. After the strenuous activity of skiing, coming into a heated room, you can go from bitter cold to burning hot in minutes. Being hot might be a minor irritant to an adult but to a 3 year old it can easily result in unexplained tantrums.
Also don't forget to bring your favourite family games, even if you normally never play together, you will be amazed on how easy it to get everyone involved on a snow holiday.
3) Rent Ski Equipment ? On Mountain
If you don't have or can't borrow then renting water proof clothing is a must.
Despite the cheaper alternatives on the way to the resort if you have little kids it better to hire skis and snowboards on mountain. Little kids are notoriously bad at judging whether a boot fits well, what they think feels fine now can start hurting within minutes on the slope, so hiring closer to your accommodation makes it easier to swap gear later.
4) Ski & Snowboard Lessons
If this is your first time skiing together then make sure you book lessons with your lift pass. Getting up on skis is not as hard as you first think but if you want to progress beyond the basic runs during your holiday then a lesson will get you there much faster and with a lot more fun. Most resorts offer a range of lesson to look after little kids for a half or full day programs and for adults and older children a couple hours group lessons each day is enough to get you going down blue slopes in no time.
5) Arrive Early
Even for seasoned snow holiday families I would always recommend to arrive at the resort during daylight hours. Not only does this make for an exciting surprise when you arrive at the resort but you will also avoid lots of potential holiday disasters, like trying to fits snow chains during a blizzard in the dark.
6) Something Else to Do
Research before you go other things you can do in the resort. Many resorts offer great family activities like tubing and tours in and around the resort, particularly for your first time it is great to break your snow holiday up.
I hope these holiday tips help you to have a great family snow holiday and you all fall in love what I believe is the all time best holidays for families.
