Famous Attractions In Italy

Although a graveyard may not seem like a conventional place to visit on holiday, Pere-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris attracts more than two million people every year. While the 106 acres of cemetery mean there are plenty of graves to visit, it is a well known fact that some graves located there tend to attract more visitors than others.

As such, probably the most famous of all the graves in Pere Lachaise is that of Jim Morrison. Jim Morrison was an American singer, writer and film maker; best known for his work as lead singer for The Doors.

Jim Morrison's grave tends to attract a much younger crowd than most of the other graves. In the past fans have come to show their respect by leaving beads and music magazines on the grave. However, the debris soon began to affect the nearby graves and Pere Lechaise cemetery now has a full-time guard standing watch over the grave.

Another grave that constantly attracts attention from visitors is that of Irish playwright Oscar Wilde. Known for his witty humour, Oscar Wilde's grave is one of the most prominent in Pere Lechaise. Oscar Wilde's tomb attracts thousands of visitors every year, particularly on the anniversary of his death, November 30th. Unlike most of the other graves which are adorned with flowers and photos, Wilde's grave is covered in lipstick kisses, showing his enduring legacy to the modern world.

Although Charles Pigeon is not as well known as the likes of Wilde or Morrison, the uniqueness of his grave makes him an attraction to thousands of visitors every year. Of course, there are many unusual graves in Pere Lachaise, but the grave of the Pigeon family is one of the most unique. The grave is a large granite double bed with a giant angel at the headstand - lying in the bed is Pigeon and his wife, clothed and in seeming conversation with one another. Pigeon's wife lies there holding a rose while Pigeon himself sits up with a notebook and pencil pondering his next invention.

Indeed, as the inventor of a non-exploding gasoline lamp, the unique design of his grave still manages to attract thousands of people every year to pay their respects.

Another popular grave in Pere Lachaise is that of musical composer Frederic Chopin. Chopin is greatly regarded as the greatest Polish composer, and one of the greatest musical composers of all time. Thanks to a continuing popularity in his music, Chopin's grave continues to attract music lovers from all over the world and is continually decorated with flowers and notes of gratitude.

Therefore, it is good to know that Pere Lachaise's location just outside of the centre mean there are plenty of nearby to accommodate all visitors to this star-studded cemetery. And for those who choose to stay in a different part of the city, the cemetery is easily accessible from most parts of Paris, and even has its own metro stop.

As one of Paris' most visited attractions - and one of the most visited cemeteries in the world - Pere Lachaise provides a unique attraction to what is already known as an exciting holiday opportunity in Paris.
