Saab has been a perennial company in Sweden. Not only is it contracted to produce military-grade engines and weapons for the Swedish Defense Forces, it is a world-wide auto manufacturer. One of the more famous cars it has produced is the Saab 9-3, known simply as the "ninety-three." It was initially produced between 1955 to 1960, but enjoyed a re-introduction in 1998, where it was offered as both a hatchback or as a two-door convertible.
In 2002, the Second Generation 9-3's did away with the hatchback, but did introduce a powerful 2.0 litre straight 4 engine. These turbocharged engines were available in 3 different versions. During 2004, Vector Aeromotive requested the cars be remodeled and branded as the Saab Aero. It still enjoyed front wheel drive, but now featured new safety features and passive rear wheel steering.
These models soon can standard with 16-inch standard wheels. In 2007, they were fitted with new dashboards and climate control systems. They also featured OnStar navigation systems, making them one of the more attractive on the market. Likewise, the radio system was upgraded to satellite radio while CD players and MP3 players came standard. Though Turbo models were allowed into the United States, the five-seed transmission was upgraded to a six-speed.
In 2007, the limited edition Turbo X model was released. It only came in one color, metallic jet black, and was the first production car equipped with an extra wide all-wheel drive system developed by Haldex Traction. The engine was capable of producing 280 hp, subsequently, the braking system had to be reinforced with larger shocks and springs. Meanwhile, the interior was fitted with a carbon fiber aesthetic, giving it a harder, more urban look.
Indeed, history proves the 9-3 was an incredibly lauded model. It has been consistently chosen as the Top Car of the Year. In 2002 it was awarded a 5 star rating in Europe. Meanwhile, it has consistently been pegged as one of the safest automobiles on the planet. When you are ready to look into powerful luxury cars, the 9-3 must on your list.
