Management Of Crohn's Disease
Sharon Dobson
There are many different types of auto-immune diseases, and Crohn's is just one of them. This condition is chronic, and the cause is largely unknown. The main complication of Crohn's is the inflammation that generally occurs in the intestines, but the condition can be found almost anywhere in the digestive tract.
The disease is unpredictable, and once you get over one complication of Crohn's disease, it would seem that another appears in its place. You never know what symptom you'll experience next, which is why it is important to understand what might happen so you can keep a good eye on your health.
There are times when a patient may notice blood in their stool. This is often because tears have formed in the anus or in the lower intestinal wall. These tears are called fissures. If the fissures don't heal, fistulas can form, leading to a huge amount pain and discomfort. These are tunnel-like growths that link the intestines and other parts of the body such as other internal organs or the skin. This is something that requires medical attention as soon as possible.
One very serious complication of Crohn's disease is when blockage occurs along in the intestines. This usually happens when there is a flare up of inflammation, or scar tissues have built up to the point where foods cannot pass through. A person who is experiencing this complication may be vomiting and having bouts of severe cramping. The lower abdominal area may be bloated as well. A doctor can prescribe something to reduce the inflammation, and that might take care of the problem. However, if this becomes a common occurrence, surgery is usually needed to correct it.
All patients of Crohn's should know that what they eat is important. One serious complication of Crohn's disease is that they cannot get what they need from the foods that pass through their systems. A person might be eating all of the right foods, but that does not mean the intestines are in a fit state to absorb what the body needs.
There are times when the intestines are so damaged that nutrients are not being absorbed, or the food is moving through so fast because of diarrhea that nutrients don't have a chance to be taken from the food. When this happens, a person usually begins to feel very weak, and they may start to lose weight without any other explanation. A doctor might suggest altering the diet or tell a patient to begin to take certain vitamins to help boost nutrition.
Any complication of Crohn's disease will require immediate medical attention. You may feel like you are always calling your doctor for one reason or another, but with a chronic condition like Crohn's, this can be expected. It is far better to be wrong about a problem than to ignore something that might be more serious.
In extreme cases caused by complications of crohn's, you may have to be admitted to hospital for IV fluids, or surgery might have to be done as soon as possible. Knowing what to look out for and what to do when you think there is something serious going on is always a good idea, especially if it seems that your health has been on a steady downward track.
