Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook
The Aquarium Lady
A saltwater reef aquarium may look wonderful but they can be extremely difficult to get setup. This is probably one of the reasons why some people choose to purchase a ready saltwater reef aquarium in which a reef community has already been established. Certainly these types of aquariums are ideal for those who don't have the time or experience to be able to set one up properly. Also you don't have the hassle that comes with actually setting up such a saltwater reef aquarium initially.
Yes you can choose to setup your own saltwater reef aquarium but it will take some time and you need a lot of patience as well. If you don't then you won't be able to set up the right kind of environment which is conducive to keeping any kind of marine life (corals, plants and fish) in the tank healthy and happy. Whilst purchasing a ready saltwater reef aquarium will be one that is set up to by professionals to offer the type of environment into which you can immediately place your chosen tropical fish, corals and other marine life.
What You Should Look For When Buying A Ready Saltwater Reef Aquarium
The main item that you will be getting in a ready saltwater reef aquarium are different species of coral. If you can go with a supplier whose corals have been grown and harvested by them, rather than them being taken from their wild habitat.
Often you can never be sure that the coral you are purchasing from an aquarium supply company has been obtained legally. Plus removing certain items from their natural habitat can be harmful to other plants and marine life in that location as well. Also what you need to remember that generally corals and marine life which are taken from their wild environment and then placed in an artificial one find it much more difficult to cope and acclimatize.
When buying a ready saltwater reef aquarium make sure that you are supplied with the appropriate chemicals you need to convert freshwater into the right kind of saltwater for the tank. These aquariums should also come with a system for helping to control the temperature of the water, to control pH levels and also allow you to mix special salt in to the water. Thus making sure that the environment within the saltwater reef aquarium is ideal for the corals, tropical fish and other marine life within it.
Another thing you need to think about before you go and purchase your ready saltwater reef aquarium is what kind of water flow system it has. You have three different options to choose from and each one will use a specific pump to make the water flow in a certain way within the tank.
What Water Flow Do You Want In Your Ready Saltwater Reef Aquarium
1. The Laminar Flow System - You need to purchase a power head pump to have this water flow system in your saltwater reef aquarium. You place the pump at one end of the tank and when turned on it forces the water out towards the other end of the tank in a horizontal pattern. Although the least expensive system to purchase it is the one that does not allow the water to circulate around your saltwater reef aquarium properly.
2. Power Or Surge Flow System - The pump that is used for this system in saltwater reef aquarium again forces the water in the tank to flow in a horizontal direction, but it can actually change the direction of the flow as well. It does this by the pump stopping and then starting back up so forcing the water to flow in the opposite direction to what it was doing previously.
3. Turbulent Water Flow System - Of the various systems one can install for regulating how the water flows in a saltwater reef aquarium, this is the best one to have. It causes the water to flow in any number of directions both horizontally and vertically. This water flow system actually simulates the kind of water flow that wild tropical fish, corals and plants will experience in their natural habitat.
