Alloy Wheel And Tyre
Levi Quinn
Unlike other wheels that are normally made out of very heavy and very durable steel, alloy rims are comprised of aluminum, magnesium or a combination of the two. This gives them a few distinct advantages that include:
Lighter weight ? This can be a very big advantage in the eyes of many motorists because lighter weight rims can improve overall vehicle functioning and handling.
Increased speed ? Alloy wheels tend to improve aerodynamics, which assists not only with speed, but gas consumption. The lower weight puts less drag on a vehicle, which is considered a very good thing by those who enjoy performance at higher speeds.
Better performance ? Many motorists discover that alloy wheels can give them a better overall ride because handling is improved when these rims replace steel. Anything that improves the steering of a vehicle can also be seen as a safety perk, as well.
Improved heat conduction ? Wheels made out of aluminum, magnesium or both are also known to conduct heat better than steel rims. This improves overall heat dissipation from braking, which can decrease the chances of brake failure. Again, this has implications in regard to the overall safety of a vehicle.
Easier balancing ? The design of alloy rims and the placement of their balancing weights makes this task a bit easier to handle. This can be an advantage for drivers who must replace tires on the fly since the balancing can remain largely intact because the weights are on the center rather than the edge of the wheel.
Improved cosmetics ? While performance and safety are very big issues, some drivers simply like alloy wheels because they look better. The fact of the matter is that alloy rims tend to be shinier and may also have unique, eye-catching designs. This removes any need for wheel covers or paint because the rims themselves are the eye candy.
While alloy wheels do have plenty of advantages, there are some cons that can go along with their use. Some of the downfalls that go along with alloy rims include:
Reduced durability ? It is hard to deny that steel is an extremely durable material, but aluminum is not. Alloy rims are simply easier to damage, ding and even destroy than steel. This can cause problems for drivers who find they must replace their rims or pay for potentially costly repairs.
The initial sticker price ? Alloy wheels are more costly to make and purchase. This can be seen as a major con for drivers on a budget.
While alloy rims are more costly and a little less durable than their steel counterparts, they do offer plenty of advantages. More than 50 percent of the drivers on the road today recognize them as a better choice when it comes to aerodynamics, safety and handling.
