Glass Mosaic Tiles Backsplash
Bruce Mendes
The question that a lot of consumers are asking; Is there really a difference between the 4mm glass and the 8mm glass mosaic tile? Why, yes there is, Price and thickness. It is a less expensive alternative to go with the 4mm glass tile vs. the 8mm glass tile. Some might say that there is a difference in the vibrance of color, but there is no difference in the look or appearance of the two.
The major concern to take into consideration is what you will be using the glass mosaic for. If you are going to coordinate the glass with a field tile, you need to take into consideration the thickness and the difficulty of installing it with a thicker or thinner product. Not that it is a major issue, most 8mm glass tiles will be the same thickness as most field tile wether it is natural stone or ceramic tile. The use of a 4mm thick glass will just require what is called "back butter" which means adding more of your setting materials to the back of the tile you are installing. There is no adverse effect to the tile, all you are doing is building out the material to be flush with what ever you are coordinating it with. Now, there is no worry of you are doing a complete project out of glass you will have no issues with thickness.
The other nice thing about glass is you will not have the need for bullnose. Most glass is a clear vibrant glass with the color coming from an attached colored backing on the tile. Unlike ceramic tile, which the ends are not attractive, the sides of the glass is a nice clean edge and attractive from the sides. The only thing you will need to consider is where you start your glass tile for installation. If there is an open end, i would start your installation there, and work towards a corner. That way if a cut is needed to finish the project it will be in a corner and not visible to the naked eye. If your project is open on both ends, most tiles are a 1" x 1" size so there is usualy room for full size piece to end your run with.
Another popular question to ask is what color grout to use. In most applications a simple white or bright white grout is used to accentuate the glass tile. Normally you are adding a glass backsplash to show the vibrant color or wild designs from the glass and the easiest way to show that is with the bright white grout. Most, will think that it will be a stark contrast, but you will be surprised that when everything is said and done it will look beautiful to look at and not to busy. Other than that why not save money and use the less expensive product and put the extra money some where else!
