Sweden has seen an incredible growth of interest in furniture and design recently. Furniture and design is just as important as the clothes we wear comparable to how we express our personality. Just like clothing fashion, Stockholm is a world leader in furniture and interior design (heminredning). As one of the world's most modern cities, regardless of your style or budget, there is something here for everyone.
The web-based company Furniturebox.se sells expensive pieces of furniture (möbler) at a reduced cost. They have a 500 sq meter store in Stockholm, and offers a realistic shopping experience with high quality furniture. Their New Scandinavian Design concept, Bolia, and hand crafted furniture is a must-see for those interested in design and handicraft. Bolia gives young designers the opportunity to join it's renowned design team through the Bolia Design Award.
POM (Piece of Mind) is a furniture company that asks why certain products that should exist do not. And then they answer that question by bringing those products into existence. Stalands Möbler with their timeless designs and DUX beds (sängar) are one of the big players in the Stockholm furniture business; as is Ekero Furniture.
Lanna Furniture came back from the recent furniture fair with a list of their customers' wishes and opinions, and they have developed their new line around them. Bromma Furniture offers sturdy, good-quality furniture from all over the world. Quality furniture is also available from Carlssons Furniture, which has been the family business for three generations. G.A.D., a Gotland-based company that also has a strong presence in Stockholm, crafts custom furniture.
One exciting area in Stockholm that the furniture lover must not miss is the SoFo region. There you'll find an exciting array of secondhand shops, galleries selling demo pieces, Feng-Shui inspired furniture as well as plenty of classic pieces from the 50s and 60s which are especially sought after right now. You will, of course, find the furniture giants of IKEA, Mio and EM in Stockholm as well.
Last but not least, when discussing Stockholm furniture we must mention the Stockholm Furniture Fair, which is the biggest gathering for Scandinavian furniture lovers. Of particular note was the Greenhouse section where new designers and international design schools have the chance to show their work. Running in parallel with the fair is the Northern Light Fair which is Scandinavia's lighting exhibition.
