This is for a number of reasons, the main one is they don't know where to pitch their website on the search engines (they have selected one word key phrases) or they have gone into an industry that is far too saturated.

The first step to determining whether your website will ever make it to the top of the search results is to look at your competitors; the primary aspect of the website to look at is the backlinks. I suggest you use a free programme available on the Internet called Tattler or Back Link Analyzer. Input your required Search Phrase into the search engine and get the results. Now take the first result and run it through the software.

If your competitor has over a thousand backlinks you may want to consider different search phrases as you may have as much as a years work ahead of you.

Find a search term where the top website has only a few backlinks, I would suggest less than four hundred. If you can find a search phrase that meets these requirements you may be able to get your website to the top of the search results within a couple of months.
