GIA, or the Gemological Institute of America, was established in 1931. This nonprofit organization is the primary authority on diamonds. Their name has become synonymous with honesty and integrity throughout the gem world. GIA's purpose is to educate the public on gemstones. GIA loose diamonds are rated using the D-Z colour scale, the I3 clarity scale and the carat or weight scale.
