Hotels In Ibiza Town
Gary Marshall
The walls surrounding Ibiza Town's old quarter, Dalt Vila, were built during the 16th century to protect the town from attack by Ottoman forces. There are five gates within the walls, the main one being the Portal de ses Taules which is accessed via a drawbridge. At the highest point of Dalt Vila is Eivissa Castle which has recently undergone a considerable amount of restoration work. Most of the buildings within the castle complex date from the 18th century, although the main tower, Torre d'Homenatge is much older. Just below the castle are the gardens of the Parque Reina Sofia, which are often used for open-air concerts.
Within Dalt Vila, which literally means 'high town' due to its hilltop location, is the 13th century Gothic cathedral of Nuestra Senora de las Nieves. Built on the site of a former mosque, the cathedral is notable for its fine altarpiece. There is also a cathedral museum within the vestry which houses some important religious relics. Just outside the town walls is another important church, Eglesia de Santo Domingo, built during the 16th century and boasting some fine Baroque-style features.
Opposite the cathedral is the Archaeological Museum which traces the history of Ibiza and the neighbouring island of Formentera, from prehistoric times to the Christian conquest in the 13th century. The museum has a particularly impressive collection of treasures from the Carthaginian occupation. Also within the Dalt Vila, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, is the contemporary art museum. Opened in 1971, the museum contains a selection of avant-garde pieces including sculptures and paintings. Some of the exhibits are housed within the former Gunpowder room underneath the town's walls.
An important archaeological site in Ibiza Town is the Phoenician burial ground of Puig del Molins. This necropolis dates back to the 7th century BC and was used continually right up until Roman times. The dead were often buried along with their possessions and offerings to the gods - coins, jewelry, amulets and other items have all been discovered here.
In between the port and Dalt Vila are the districts of Sa Penya and La Marina. These are the best areas to visit if you want to dine out, indulge in a spot of shopping or enjoy a night on the town. Two of the best-known clubs are Pacha and El Divino, while the Rock Bar, Zoo Bar and Base Bar are the pick of the pre-club venues. There are three beaches within walking distance of Ibiza Town. The most popular of these is Playa D'en Bossa, just over a mile from the centre. A couple of late-night discos, Bora Bora and Space, are both located next to this beach.
Ibiza Town is about 5 miles (8 km) from the airport. There is a regular half-hourly bus service from the airport, although taxis are usually more convenient.
