Hotels In Disney Area
Stephanie Larkin
Driving around Walt Disney World and the other theme parks of central Florida has become as challenging as riding "Dueling Dragons", and if you don't plan properly, it can be as frustrating as waiting on line for a popular ride during Spring break. Here are some tips and alternate routes that may help you to get around:
If you are driving to the Disney area from the north and you will be arriving during rush hours, driving on I-4 through Orlando can be a sure way to start your vacation out on the wrong foot. One alternate route is to take 417 from I-4 north of Orlando, around Lake Mary. If you are staying near Universal Studios, you can exit at the East/West Expressway west to Kirkman Road, and if you are staying near Disney, just stay on 417 to the Osceola Parkway.
If you are coming south from the Florida Turnpike, there is a new road called the Western Beltway which comes in by Route 50, and it takes you right down to 192 just west of the main gate of Disney to avoid Interstate 4. If you are coming from the airport, instead of taking 528 (the 'Beeline') to I-4, you can take 417 to the Osceola Parkway, or directly to 192, depending where you are staying.
Be aware that the busiest roads are the ones closest to all of the shops, restaurants and attractions: 192 and International Drive. If you are going someplace on one of these roads, you'll want to find out what major cross street it is near, so that you stay off the main drag for as long as possible (unless, of course, you want to see all the sights while traveling 2 miles per hour!) Some options to traveling along 192 include taking the 535 exit (or 536 into 535) off Interstate 4 which joins 192 East about halfway through, or taking the Osceola Parkway from I-4 to Poinciana Boulevard. Routes 535, 536 and the Osceola Parkway also head directly into Disney World to the west, so they provide a much easier route to and from the theme parks.
Some of the suggested roads (including 417 and the Osceola Parkway) are toll roads, but you may find that it is well worth the small tolls (carry change) to avoid major traffic headaches. You will want to get a detailed road map of the area to plot out alternate routes, and most attraction guides distributed for free at the tourism centers include maps. Good luck, and please drive safely!
