In 1901 at the age of 21, William Harley drew up plans to make a 116 cc engine. The engine was designed for use in a regular pedal-bicycle frame. When it was completed the boys found their power-cycle unable to conquer Milwaukee's modest hills without pedal assistance. IN April of 1905 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were being sold in a limited basis.
That year the first Harley-Davidson dealer, sold three bikes from the twelve or so built in the backyard shed. In 1906, Harley and the Davidsons built their first factory on Chestnut Street, which is the headquarters to the company to this day. Despite the competition, Harley-Davidson was already pulling ahead of Indian and would dominate motorcycle racing after 1914. Production that year swelled to 16,284 machines.
