History Culture And Society
Perry Manzani
The incredible diversity of people give Chicago its character, with an incredible blend of culture and arts. Chicago is a unique place to find jazz and blues, it permeates the city. The cultural also creates a rich diversity in the culinary circles of the city. With so much happening, Chicago should be on the top of your list of cities to visit.
There are many attractions in Chicago that you won't want to miss. One of these attractions is the Art Institute of Chicago. You'll be able to spend a few hours looking at art and sculpture from the last 5000 years. The huge collection of postimpressionist and impressionist paintings are a must while you're at the museum. Don't forget to get your picture taken beside the lions outside the museum.
After a morning of sightseeing you might want to pay a visit to the Lincoln Park area of Chicago. This neighborhood is alive both day and night as people walk, run, cycle, rollerblade, and stroll along the busy streets. Lincoln Park is well known for the Biograph Theater, since this is where the FBI shot John Dillinger in 1934.
Other attractions in this neighborhood include the Lincoln Zoo, which is free to the public. Visit with the gorillas and chimpanzees before checking out the more uncommon animals, such as the Galapagos turtle and poisonous spiders from around the world. A big hit at this zoo is when the chimpanzees come out to draw for you. Some of the art created by the chimpanzees has been sold around the world.
After visiting Lincoln Park you can take a walk along the Magnificent Mile, which is an avenue that leads from Lincoln Park all the way to the Chicago River. This stretch of road is great for those shopping enthusiasts who love a bargain or a boutique. The Tribune Tower is found along the Magnificent Mile and warrants a look. The tower was built in 1925 and its gothic beauty is still astounding even today. The base of the Tribune is embedded with rocks obtained by newspaper reporters from around the world.
The highlight of a trip to Chicago for your children may be a visit to the Shedd Aquarium. The Shedd Aquarium, built in 1929, contains one of the world's largest collections of marine and aquatic animals. The huge central tank contains 500 tropical fish, everything from moray eel to the quiet nurse shark. In addition, you'll see sea otters, penguins, dolphins, beluga whales, and harbor seals.
No visit to Chicago is complete without a stop at Wrigley field, the famous baseball field of the century. Walk around and get a feel for the game. Taking home a few pictures of this famous landmark will make you the envy of any baseball fan.
No matter what time of the year that you visit Chicago you'll always be able to find something to do. The winter months can be a bit cold and snowy but that's what gives Chicago its charm and reputation.
