Every home owner has probably been guilty of postponing those small home repairs that just do not seem to be hurting anything at the moment and in the majority of cases this might be true. When the porch needs painting or when a window is sticking it really not a big deal. However, there are some home repairs that can damage the home and the longer you put off getting them fixed, the more it can cost you in the long run.

Sometimes plumbing issues can be some of those things. If you have a toilet that continues to run after the tank has finished filling, it might not be causing any damage, but it will make your water bill more expensive. This is usually caused because the inside toilet fixtures needs to be adjusted or repaired. It will probably cost twenty dollars or so to replace the parts and a home owner can usually do this small repair job on their own.

The plumbing problems that can eventually cost you a lot of money are leaks. When pipes leaks or the toilet leaks around the base, it can cause your floors and nearby walls to rot. This can be aggravating and expensive enough to repair if it is let go long enough for real damage to occur. This reason alone is why it leaks should be fixed as quickly as they are discovered.

Even rotting wood from leaks might not be your biggest problem. Mold can develop quickly and spread faster than you might think. As long as the conditions are right for it to start and continue to thrive, it will. Wood is a perfect food source for mold as is sheetrock. Before you know what has happened mold can be growing under the floor into the main structure of your home and behind the walls and into the studs.

If you allow plumbing leaks to get to this point, you could find yourself being out of a lot more money than a measly twenty bucks. It could end up costing you hundreds or even thousands to tear out a floor, a wall, and replace them. This might be the only way to be completely rid of the mold.

The next time you find a plumbing leak in your home, go ahead and have it repaired immediately and clean the wet area with a mold killing disinfectant just to be on the safe side even if you do not see any visible mold or mildew. The small amount of money you spend now could save you the big money later on.
