Horseback Riding For Kids

Horseback Riding Lessons: Good Advice for Kids & Adults
Have you
thought of doing something really different on your weekend or for your
vacation? I asked myself that question and the answer was ?Yes?! And even
better, I knew what I wanted to do. I had always wanted to learn to ride a
horse. Maybe even go on one of those wonderful equestrian vacations.
As a
child I badgered my parents for a horse. My plan was to keep the horse in our
basement?there was a direct route to the back yard from there'it made sense to a
ten-year-old girl. My parents didn't buy it. I spent my youth in a dance studio.
My parents thought it was safer. The desire to learn to ride never went away.
Sound familiar?
I
mentioned to my husband that I would love to learn to ride. He said, ?Why don't
you take some lessons?? I thought he was the best husband a gal could have!
Here was
the tricky part. I was now an adult with very little horse experience. I had
been on some trail rides and done well enough but I knew you didn't pull riding
ability out of thin air.
After a
search on the internet I found
Woodland Horse Center in Silver Spring, MD. I went to their free
introductory lesson and was able to start right away.
Beginner Riding Lessons:
I found
my classes very enjoyable because the school horses are tolerant of mistakes
beginners make and kindly help the student ride correctly. My instructor,
Michelle, was patient and had a great sense of humor. I was hooked! My skills
progressed and I have fulfilled my life-long dream. Now wait, it gets better! I
have owned my horse for four years and have loved every minute of becoming a
horsewoman.
If you
or you kids have a similar equestrian dream, I have some good advice to share.
TAKE
LESSONS!
How many
times have you heard someone say the horse ran away with me or I couldn't get
him to leave the barn? If that person had had some expert instruction they would
have understood how the horse was thinking. With that knowledge his job as the
rider would be much easier. My advice, don't even think about taking your
children out on a trail ride without at least one hour of formal training. It's
just not safe and not much fun either.
Horseback Riding Lessons:
Learning
to ride, as an adult or as a child, is an adventure. It is fun, challenging and
completely worth doing! If you have an equestrian dream, then you must heed my
advice. Take some
horseback riding lessons. You will gain balance, control and confidence.
Your dream will be better than imagined and worth the wait!
My
husband, who had instruction as a child, is now a member of Woodland's
Equi-Lease program.
Horseback riding has become a family activity. Even our daughter and
granddaughter have taken lessons!
That's
another great thing about learning to ride. I see the contribution horses make
to our children. When I come out to the barn I see happy, health and confident
kids. These kids are living the dream and the safe way to do it is through
expert instruction. The knowledge and skills they learn will be useful their
entire life.
Are you
ready to make your own dream come true? Before you go galloping off into the
sunset, do yourself and your kids a great favor and take riding lessons. You
will thank yourself in the end!
