History World Part 1
Helen M Green
‘Balderdash'! I hear you cry-not so in my opinion. There are too many researches and studies which indicate that colour has a very profound impact on our psychological, emotional and physical well being.
One of the problems with choosing colours is that many people find it difficult to know which colours suit, tone and blend with each other well. However, colours may not in theory appear to match or coordinate but if they make you feel happy and are pleasing to your eye then why not use them?
Modern colour designers are breaking what used to the ‘rules' when using colour. Using colours which traditionally are considered inappropriate combinations and successfully using them in some very striking interior designs.
Colours are also associated with the senses; for example if you wish people to have a healthy appetite try using red in a dining room, as red is thought to stimulate appetite. Think of all the red foods there are which make you feel hungry! Strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, glossy red apples, a bowl of cherries-all different shades of red-all make you feel hungry! Red teams well with natural woods, especially mahoganies and rose woods, dining tables and chairs made of these coloured woods offer a striking and well coordinated appearance to a dinning area.
Red is also associated with romance and love-red roses, red hearts. Bold shades of red can also create a sense of warmth, making it an ideal colour for bedrooms which are north facing. Teamed with creams or even black bedding a sensuous and fun atmosphere can easily be achieved.
Blue is considered to be a cold colour. Yet different shades of blue can remind of warmth. For example- bright blue skies and oceanic hues of blue are reminiscent of warm holidays and tropical paradises. It all depends on the shade and the context in which blue is used.
This vibrant blind with different shades of blue available from is ideal for bathrooms which have a seaside or exotic island theme. White paintwork and bathroom suite keeps the blue in context. When used at a window which is south facing the natural warmth of sunlight will add to the overall visual effect in a striking way. Having accent pieces in similar shades of blue, such as towels, a picture or mirror frame, a vase or perfume bottles placed on uncluttered shelves or window sill offer a well coordinated and cohesive look can provide a feeling of warmth and tranquillity.
For those who prefer a real seaside type theme could effectively incorporate sand yellows, colours of tropical fish or pebbles to create an more traditional bathroom look with the same striking blue roller blind. The great thing about using roller blinds in a bathroom is their resilience to damp and humid conditions.
