First discovered in the 12th century, Valmeinier was practically self-sustaining with most of its inhabitants living off the land until the 17th century. Then, anthracite was discovered and the area transformed into a mining village (hence the name Valmeinier). Between the middle of the 19th century until the early 20th century, agriculture and mining were the two driving forces of the economy. Cereals were grown up to an altitude of 1500 meters and during winter, some farmers moved to the cities to work as chimney sweepers. The late ‘60s were marked by the end of traditional farming and a massive depopulation ensued. By the end of the 70s, Valmeinier counted less than 80 permanent inhabitants.
The first ski lift was built in that period, in 1973 to be precise, connecting Valmeinier to the Valloire ski area. The village at an altitude of 1500 meters started to develop with the opening of a few holiday villages. It is in 1986 that the resort at 1800 meters was launched, with the opening of lifts to serve the Gros Crey area. In 1997, regional authorities and the council agreed in collaborating to give a push to the resort's development by undertaking major restructuring. That collaboration resulted in the expansion of the resort and, since 1999, different residences part of reputable French groups opened in Valmeinier.
Definitely innovative, Valmeinier boasts some of the nicest European snowparks: one progressive snowpark, one half pipe, one ski cross, some Easyparks and one ARVA Park. Night skiing and boarding are also possible. Not only innovative on the slopes, Valmeinier makes the whole skiing experience more accessible by putting forward a carpooling service as well as friend-skiing. Friend-skiing is a way to be put in relation with people to ski or surf together. It allows to share a passion with someone, appreciate the beauty of the landscape and meet new friends. The registering system for friend-skiing and carpooling is the same.
Valmeinier 1800 is a very compact village, making it ideal for families and groups. There is a varied selection of cafes, bars, restaurants, plenty of shops and, for entertainment, a nightclub, two cinemas and a bowling alley are found. Valmeinier 1500 is the "original" village, smaller and with an authentic alpine ambiance. It boasts a couple of bar-restaurants, a pub and another cinema, and for further activities, it is not far to the neighbouring village of Valloire. Accommodation options are plenty in Valmeinier, in whichever village one decides to reside. Residences, hotels and private apartments are all available to rent for days, weeks or even the whole season.
