I Like My Best Friend
Gary Tooth
There's just something about quality jewelry that makes certain people stand out in a crowd. Some might even say that expensive jewels are for egomaniacs who are crying out for attention. Others would argue that wearing jewelry is simply about taking care of yourself and that it's all part of self image and portraying who you are. More than ever before, image appears to be so important in today's competitive societies. Well, maybe it's not necessary to micro analyze the wearing of jewelry and just let and let live. All that I can say in the defense of gold, precious stones, diamond studded watches etc is that when my wife puts on her best rocks she looks a million dollars, and especially when she slips on here Cartier jewelry items.
I never actually paid any close attention to what brands she wore, or where she purchased particular things until a few pieces began to stand out. In the past, whenever she bought something new, she'd have to parade in front of me and ask if it looked beautiful or not. It was often a bit of a guessing game because to be honest, I wasn't always aware of what it was that I was supposed to be looking at. Was it the earrings, the necklace, or had she got a new bracelet? She had such a lot of stuff, with some of it being precious, some semi precious, and some costume jewelry, so it was quite impossible to keep track of her huge collection.
Anyhow, all of a sudden, throughout last year, I began to notice new jewelry items before she even got the chance to show them off. Whow! I would say, "That's a beautiful necklace. When did you get that"? Or "Those earrings are just stunning. I don't think I've ever seen them before". Of course, she was lapping it up until the day she told me she'd only been buying Cartier Jewelry of late. Well, I nearly chocked on my own spit! I thought Cartier jewelry was well out of our financial league and suddenly saw the credit cards melting in front of me.
After sitting down and being handed a glass of cold water by my wife, she explained that although Cartier Jewelry is quite expensive, it's nowhere near as bad as I might think. She then pulled out a catalogue from under the bed (good hiding place that!), and began to flick though the pages pointing out the price tags for her recent purchases as she went along. Well, she was right, it's wasn't bargain basement that's for sure, but at the same time it wasn't going to send us under either. I began to get even more color back to my cheeks when she said that all the items she'd purchased had been in knock down sales. I wish she told me that to start with, as I was a cat's whisker away from a heart attack!
She then continued to rummage around at the back of her underwear draw and presented me with a small box. "Here", she said. "I was going to save this for your birthday, but seeing as you've been a bit upset today, I think I'll give it you now". I opened the lid and inside was the most beautiful mans watch I had ever seen. She had bought me a Cartier Santos automatic movement with 18K yellow gold octagonal crown set with a faceted spine. It had a silvered praline dial with Roman numerals and a smart dark brown leather strap. "This was not in the sale" she added. "I've been saving for 2 years to get you a decent watch. I hope you like it"?
I liked it alright, and although I'm not a materialistic man as a rule, I now wear this watch with great pride and sentiment, and every time I look at it, I remember the day I received it with fondness. Thankfully my wife has calmed down with her jewelry collection as even she sees now that quality is better than quantity. I think it's fair to say that all Cartier jewelry is elegant and stylish, and because it's a little on the pricy side, luxurious too, and my watch is no exception!
