Indoor Rock Climbing Walls
Kris Koonar
Indoor rock climbing walls usually have wooden walls for its basic structure. Plywood sheets of adequate thickness with anchors are placed and used in building climbing walls. Varying degrees of difficult positions can be setup in segments. The possibility of setting up segments with different difficult levels is limitless.
Handholds and fasteners are essential parts you need, when shopping for an indoor rock-climbing wall. The standard requirement is one handhold per three square feet of wall. However for optimum performance, you may opt for one handhold per two square feet. Handholds need to be of the highest quality and need to last for at least a year. Make sure that handholds are purchased from manufacturers, who are highly regarded by expert climbers. Handholds should be guaranteed against breakage for at least a year. Fasteners with adequate length are recommended for correct threading and should be compatible with the handholds purchased.
Climbing ropes are not needed, if you are an indoor climber. However, it is recommended to have climbing ropes. There are two options available, when selecting a rope: dynamic and static. Static ropes are not elastic and the climber with the equipment will feel the jerk in case of a fall. Whereas a dynamic rope is elastic and will reduce the force in case of a fall and the climber with equipment will experience much lesser jerk. Dry-treated ropes do not absorb water and will also last longer.
Non-dry ropes are inexpensive compared to dry ropes and can be used in dry conditions. Dynamic ropes are recommended for lead-climbing and top-roping. One rope for every belay bar is recommended. Manufacturers sticking to the U.I.A.A. guidelines are the best place to buy ropes.
Comfortable and lightweight harness is recommended. Climbing ropes are attached to the harness, which is worn around the waist. Harness that can also be worn around the chest and the full body version are also available. Usually beginners and kids use the chest and full body versions. Expert climbers prefer harnesses that have a lot of padding, as they carry a lot of equipment.
Helmet is another important equipment needed to save climbers from serious injury to the skull. It is recommended to always wear helmets, when climbing. Other equipments required are webbing, carabiners, quickdraws, chalk and chalk bag, belay devices, rappel device, climbing tape etc.
Perhaps the most important thing to consider in indoor rock climbing wall is the protective flooring. The flooring should ideally extend at least six feet around the entire climbing area. Good flooring will protect the climbers from serious head and body injuries, in case of a fall. There are various options in choosing the carpeted impact absorbing flooring, dust resistant flooring, pea gravel or chopped rubber.
Ladders are required to define the climbing routes efficiently. Ladders that extend up to six feet and more are available to reach higher areas.
Installing an indoor rock-climbing wall will be great for your family and friends. Practicing techniques and attempting different moves will give you a complete aerobic and anaerobic workout. Indoor rock-climbing is both thrilling and rewarding.
