It is completely understandable that the economy is taking precedence in everyone's thoughts recently, but it would be really refreshing to hear the Presidential Candidates pay a little more attention to the crisis going on in the health insurance industry in America.
Did you know that during the past 18 months, health insurance premiums have doubled? That is quite honestly insane. Unfortunately, the main issue in this crisis is that more and more people in this country can not afford to carry insurance and therefore can not get the care that they need.
Americans without insurance still get sick, they just don't go to the doctor. They wait until it gets better by itself, or let it worsen and perhaps go to the emergency room. This is costing more than the initial doctor visit would have, not to mention the many more people that were infected in the interim.
We need comprehensive insurance coverage for all Americans and we need to stop allowing the insurance companies to determine what fees are reasonable and customary. It just seems to me that for the amount of time you actually spend with a doctor when you have an office visit that the cost is way too much for what you are getting.
At this point, Americans need to re asses and rebuild our health care system. Whether that means everyone has the same insurance plans or that we retain our individual plans and restructure our system, I am not sure. I am only sure of the need for a change.
