Immigration In The Early 1900s
MaryLu
After 1900, women's hats went into a period of design that was known as "Edwardian." Hats in this period went with the latest fashions of the time, which included long skirts that went to the floor. Similarly, hats of this time were elaborate enough to truly adorn the head of the wearer. At this time, they often had a large brims and prominent accents.
Hairstyles of the time meant that hats were necessary to accommodate central parts and soft “wings" on either side that covered the ears. Because of this, hats with wider brims were introduced; larger hats also matched and balanced out the fuller hairstyles. Many hats during these days were very wide and tall.
Lingerie Hats
Around 1904, lingerie hats came into fashion. They were made of muslin or lace and were light enough to be worn on a summer day. Oftentimes, lingerie dresses of ivory, cream or other "shades" of white were worn. This was also a symbol of wealth during this time, as lingerie dresses gave the impression that a woman came from wealth, since it was very expensive to have clothes cleaned; this was especially true for white clothes that had been soiled. If you could wear white or cream-colored clothing, it meant that you had a maid at home or that you could pay another to wash clothes.
Merry Widow Hat
Around 1907, women's fashion entered the empire style, this meant that lines were tapered and slimming. Dresses actually tapered down to the feet, which made the "Merry Widow" picture hat an attractive accessory. The Merry Widow was originally meant for those who regularly attended the operetta, but it became an influence in hat designs and continued for many years. This hat was always black in color (hence the “merry widow" label), and sported chiffon and feathers, perhaps even with such things as cherries about the brims. Sometimes there were ribbons that streamed down from the hats, with blackberries, other pieces of fresh fruit, or flowers used on them.
Turbans
The turban, which was of the "maharaja" design, became quite popular during the early 1900s. This was used to completely conceal the hair. In 1910, evening turbans became popular and let women express themselves with a little bit more flair than the traditional headdress allowed. Oftentimes, these turbans had an Oriental flavor to them.
Small Toque Hats
Around 1911, hats became smaller; the toque hat was meant to replace those large wide brimmed hats of earlier years. However, the wide brimmed hats continued to be a popular choice for women who needed to dress up. The toque hat, nonetheless, still boasted plumes or feathers atop them, for a more regal appearance. During this time, Mephisto feathers were a popular adornment for these hats.
