Telecommunication services in Greece now give their consumers modern services that allow people to talk and communicate through landlines, high speed internet and mobile phones. In the last 10 years Greece has made a tremendous effort to upgrade its telecommunication structure throughout the country. This has enabled services like DSL to be widely available to a large portion of the Greek population.

If you do not have phone service and are applying for the first time, you will probably need to apply to the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization for a landline. This company is supplies the phone service for first time applicants. To begin the process you will need to either call the OTE (Hellenic Telecommunications Organization) or visit in person. To apply, you will need to provide a tax I.D. number and an official photo I.D. There is usually a one- time charge for starting your phone service. OTE monthly service includes such things as call forwarding, call waiting and voice mail as standard options. Once a consumer has the OTE service activated then they are allowed a choice of selecting a separate phone carrier. There are over 15 companies in the country that offer landline services. Because of the option of selecting a secondary phone carrier many customers who choose this option will get a monthly bill from each company. Examples of companies that offer fixed line telecommunication are OTE, ACN, NetOne and Tellas.

Mobile phone service in Greece is supplied by 4 major carriers in the country. These companies are CosmOTE, Vodafone, Telestet and Q Telecom. All of the cell phone companies offer a selection of prepaid service and subscription service. People who use prepaid options are those that do not use their mobile phones very much and do not want an extra monthly expense. You can still get paid up service even if you already own a cell phone. Subscription mobile service is when the consumer buys a plan that has a set amount of phone minutes and pays for that plan every month. Always check to see which mobile phone company offers the service you need for the lowest price. Some mobile prefixes are 694, 697 and 699.

When you are outside the country of Greece and wish to place a call into the country you will need to dial the International Phone Code for Greece which is 30. The local Greek city area telephone code number for the city you wish to reach will follow the 30 for connection.
