When you have a fire in your home, it can be so devastating to have your house and belongings damaged and destroyed. Many times the entire home will not be affected and the destruction, if you are lucky, might be limited to just one or two rooms. That does not mean that the cleanup, repair, and redecorating will be easy. The insurance coverage will usually supply the funds to take care of these issues, but there will still be plenty of decisions to be made on your part.

When there are walls damaged in the home, before you even start the repairs, you need to ask yourself how you liked the previous layout. It could be that now that you have to have walls replaced, would you like to change them somewhat? It might not cost anymore to reposition or change the walls in some way than it will to put them back exactly like they were. This is something that you will have to discuss with your carpenter, but there is no better time than now to make the decision.

Once you have the walls back in place or repaired, there is the possibility that the floors in the rooms will have to be recovered. This is also an opportunity to do something different. Instead of putting back in carpet or linoleum, you might like to lay tiles or hardwood instead. Just as with the wall layout, now is the time to decide and you can take advantage of the destruction to change what you had before.

Once you have your entire rooms restored, then you can consider the decorating scheme. If before your rooms had an older looking style, you might wish to replace your furnishings with more modern looking ones. If you had a country look, you might like to change to a French or Asian feel. The decorating choices are up to you and since you must redecorate, make it what you want. Nothing can take away the sting of losing your old stuff better than replacing it with new things that you might like even better.

Anytime there is damage done to the home you love, it is going to be difficult to except and put behind you, but try to look at this as an opportunity to improve the home in ways that you did not have the chance to before. There is nothing that says that you have to stay sad about damage when you come out with improvements that might well work better for you in the long run.
