Koh Mak (or "Ko Maak") is the third largest island of an archipelago of 52 islands in Koh Chang Marine National Park, about 40 kilometers to the south of Koh Chang that is blessed with several beautiful bays and beaches and coral reefs nearby that are still in perfect condition. Koh Mak is undoubtedly a jewel in the crown of Koh Chang Marine National Park. Koh Mak is located on the East of the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 35 kilometers from the main land (Trat province). Koh Mak is also the third biggest island in Trat province after Koh Chang and Koh Kood, with an area of 16 square kilometers; it is mostly flat. Koh Mak has a circumference of 27 kilometers, and white sandy beaches stretch from the north-west of the island round to the south.
The islanders make their living by growing rubber and coconut trees. The traditional occupations of the island are agricultural: most of the land is cultivated as plantations of coconut or para rubber. It is said that the island was first settled by Chao Sua Seng, who established a coconut plantation, and who occupied the post of Palad Jeen, or Chinese Affairs Officer, during the reign of King Rama V (King Chula-longkorn). Later, Chao Sua Seng sold his coconut plantation to "Luang Prompakdii", Plian Taveteekul, who also held the post of Chinese Affairs Officer and who came originally from Ban Koh Po in Prachankiriket province. This is now the province of Koh Kong in Cambodia, but at that time it was a province of Thailand.
The best time to visit Koh Mak island is from November till late April. There are a number of accommodations and tourist facilities available. A passenger boat departs Laem-Ngob pier daily at 3:00 pm and returns from Koh Mak at 7:00 am, travelling time is about 3.5 hours.
