J Holiday Dont Go
Rene Fletcher
Since consumers go into debt each year during the holidays, finding a way to stay within your shopping budget crucial. Setting a budget for everyone on your shopping list makes this easier by assigning an amount to each person. The following paragraphs will discuss this great way to avoid overspending.
Setting your "mini-budget"
Let's say for example, your holiday budget for this season is $500.00 and you have 10 people to shop for. If you take the amount of your budget, $500.00 and divide it by the number of people on your list, which is this case is 10, that gives you $50.00 to spend per person. This "mini-budget" of $50.00 per person helps put into perspective how much you can reasonably spend without going over your total available spending cash.
Buying Several Gifts instead of one big one.
Based on our example above, your "mini-budget" of $50.00 per person can go a long way if you use it wisely. The cost of gifts can be overwhelmingly expensive and to stay on track try this approach. If you could spend $50.00 on someone, what would you buy? If one specific gift comes to mind that is fine. But, if you really can't think of anything in particular, why not several gifts that add up to that amount.
If you can find several smaller items to give to people on your shopping list then you have given them the opportunity to open several gifts. Everyone likes opening gifts and the more presents they have to open, the more they feel like you have spent a lot of time and energy on them.
Think about it, would you rather have one gift to open or several? Most people would like several, it's the same for those on your shopping list. Children and friends are really going to love this ideas because the more presents wrapped up for them, the better. Just like children, friends appreciate this sentiment just as much. Giving them five nicely wrapped gifts instead of one large one creates excitement and endearment toward you.
Plan ahead for next year.
Planning ahead for next year can't start right away. Most banks, credit unions, and companies offer a Christmas club account which is a great way to get started. If you can choose an option where your savings is deducted before your receive your paycheck, choose this option. The great thing about this type of savings is that it adds up quickly, no matter how much of a contribution you make. You can then withdraw your money right before you begin your shopping next year.
If you aren't sure that a new account is for you, then get creative about saving money on the side just for Christmas. If saving all of your five dollar bills in an envelope until the holidays sounds good, then do that. Just find a way for you to save that is reasonable, fun, and affordable for you. The trick is to not use the money for anything else which takes a little discipline.
Now that you have a plan for your holiday shopping, you can enjoy the entire holiday season so much more. The fact of knowing that you will not be going into debt from overspending can make this the best time of year for you and your family.
