Transplantations used to only be performed using single hairs but now, as technology advances, we can use several hairs placed upon a micrograft. Surgeons are now able to select from the patient's scalp, individual hair follicles which is known as stereo-microscopic dissection. This means that the surgeon can generate a hair follicle that has all the correct anatomical structures needed for growth and survival.

A selected hair follicle has to be cleaned from excess skin and fat, and then it is placed into the patient at an angle which matches the skin properly with a hypodermic needle. When grafts are placed closely, lumps and uneven tissue can form but by using microscopically dissected grafts (these are nothing but hair follicles), they can be placed very close together with little to no complications.

Transplantations do not always go according to plan and there are sometimes complications. Common issues are usually that involving the hair retaining its original thickness, shape and growth rate which can differ to that of the patient's original hair. The thickness of hair can be trimmed down but can result in irregularities occurring. Coarse hair is a poor match for most cases, especially in cases for women so finer hair is much preferred.

Another complication that can occur is the wounds sustained from the operation will contract and can then cause the transplanted hair to grow vertically, which lifts the hair away from the skin thus giving a fuller and somewhat bushier look. Although there is a great deal of precision involved, there may be some elevation in the operated area.

Eyebrow transplantation is performed in an outpatient's ward in most cases and is very safe. The act of surgery to restore one's eyebrows can only be correctly done by a very skilled surgeon and can give a new look to the appearance of any patient and go a very long way in restoring an individual's confidence and self-esteem.
