These pills come in colorful package with exiting names and promise the moon. Rave, Xplode, Activ8 and Frozen are some of the fancy names of such pills. Along with attractive packaging, these drugs are sold with a lot of catchy advertisements. These drugs promise unique features that will ?blow you off your feet?, ?energize you?, make opposite sex attract towards you, etc. With such highly volatile publicity, there is every likelihood of getting submerged without caring for the authencity of these drugs and the advertisements. It is often observed that users of these party pills have no knowledge about the side-effects and legality of these drugs. Most of the party goers choose a particular pill just because their friend provides them a positive response. Due to ignorance, these party goers put their lives in jeopardy.

Majority of these drugs are derived from a broad class of chemical compound known as piperazine. There is negligible information about the long-term effects of substances used in party pills, although some research projects have been undertaken to analyze the long-term side-effects of these recreational drugs. Though most of piperazine derivatives are good medicines which do not cause any side-effects, some especially BZP can cause schizophrenia, hallucinations, paranoia, kidney damage and multiorgan failure.

Short-term effects of these drugs include dehydration, feeling stressed, lacking energy, loss of appetite, increase in heart rate, convulsion and sleep deprivation. As there is no much research material and some research is going on to ascertain long term effects of these pills, it is impossible to give correct information regarding the same. But based on some of the substances that go into party pills, it can be authoritatively said that long term use of these pills can cause brain damage and kidney damage along with other organ damage.

The legal status of party pills is often confusing and a lot needs to be done in this regard. For example, most of these pills are banned in some countries, but are easily available in some. The reason for not banning such drugs is that these may be consumed illegally and may lead to their abuse. From April 1, 2008, BZP comes under Class C1 controlled drug and it will be illegal to manufacture, sell, export, import, use or posses it.

As it is clear from above information, lot has to be done towards legality of these pills and as there is very less research on long term effects, it is prudent to avoid such pills or take them in small doses and for a short duration.
