In the past anyone who could read and write may be a Lawyers clerk if they find employment in a law firm. But today the situation has drastically altered to a point where you must be well educated in law and Paralegal studies to be able to successfully carry out your duties as a Paralegal. The entry level of a Paralegal is a bachelor degree. If you are the Paralegal head or the only Paralegal in a law firm, your duties will include the day to day management of the law firm.
The Paralegal career may be challenging but it is also rewarding for Paralegals who have adequate Paralegal training and the capacity to be thorough in the execution of their duties!If you are well trained and proficient in your duty as a Paralegal the challenges of the Paralegal career will pale into insignificance while the reward will mount all through your career. This is why this article aims to educate you as to what you should expect as duties when you eventually graduate from your Paralegal training and find a Paralegal employment:
As a Paralegal you are expected to be conversant with the law having obtained adequate training from an American Bar Association approved Paralegal institution. You may be assigned the job of writing legal documents. In the past most of the jobs Paralegals do today were done by lawyers, but with the upgrading of Paralegal training, firms have found it convenient to hire Paralegals than lawyers and save money. Many a time a Paralegal is employed in such a position because their remuneration is lower than that of an attorney; or basically to assist an attorney where the work load is huge. You have to be hard working to be able to contain the pressure. and the organization you represent as a Paralegal. I know of Paralegals who make more money from overtime than their basic pay.
As a Paralegal you may have specialized in a particular field such as Immigration. However, the extra pay due you for the overtime work should be enough motivation to give your best. I know of Paralegals who make more money from overtime than their basic pay. For instance, a Military Paralegal should have been trained and passed both Military and war law courses to qualify as a Military Paralegal. If you desire advancement in your career as a Paralegal,then consider upgrading your training and get a certification from the appropriate Paralegal Association.
The major challenge of the Paralegal career is the mountain of work that must be done. Today you have Paralegals in all fields of life, and the entry level for a Paralegal is now a Bachelor degree. This is where a Paralegal passes the acid test or falls by the way side.
