1928 Model A Truck
Victor Epand
Whether you have just gotten a model truck for a gift thinking that you would enjoy putting it together or maybe you have decided to do try it out for yourself. One way or the other you are going to start down the path to a pastime that many people around the world enjoy. It can be very rewarding as well as being a great way of relieving stress. It will help you greatly if you understand exactly how a quality model truck is assembled. The first part to this is to gather your tools.
The tools you will need to do this are rather simple. You will need your model, some model cement, and possibly a toothpick. Some other tools that might be handy can be a small hobby clamp, a drop cloth, and some alcohol wipes. The hobby clamp can come in handy when you want to hold small parts together so that the cement can have time to dry. Sometimes parts can have a tendency to slip apart while they are drying. An alcohol wipe can help if you want to clean any excess cement that has dripped anywhere it wasn't needed. A drop cloth can also help to catch these stray drips.
The very first thing you should do is to figure out the parts that will be assembled first. Very carefully cut these pieces from the sprue (the plastic frame that they are attached to). Sometimes there are pieces of flashing that are left over when the parts came out of their mold at the factory. They are just extra pieces that are not needed for your model. You might want to set these aside rather than throwing them away. You might possibly need them for repairs later on. After you have gotten these cut loose you should then do a dry fit. This means that you should hold the parts together so you will know ahead of time whether or not they are going to fit. If they do fit together then you can go ahead and cement them together.
All you have to do is to dab a bit of the model cement onto the toothpick. Then take your toothpick and use it to apply the model cement on the parts that you are attaching. Make sure that you are just placing a small amount. The toothpick helps to prevent a mess by only allowing you to use a small bit of cement. After you have applied the cement you can then put the parts together. If you want to use the clamp at this point you should feel free to do so. It can help to hold them lightly in place. Once they are attached you should then place them to the side so that they have time to dry. You might want to give them a few hours. This will give the cement time to properly set up.
There are a few important points that you should keep in mind. The first is concerning hobby clamps. If you do not have any then you should try to make your own. By using a paper clip, a paper clamp, or a rubber band you can do the same thing as using a clamp. Another thing to remember is that you should treat your cement well. Make sure that you always replace the top. It will keep it from drying out. Lastly you should remember to have fun. Model building is a very good hobby for passing the time and should be enjoyed.
