When you log on and click on your webcam you are opening your doors to friends, whether you like it or not. Just like any other first encounter first impressions do last, so find time and put some thought into setting up your stage
Adjust Your Webcam and Lighting Optimally
Start with your camera and lighting. Position your web camera to the side a bit, so it creates a nice looking semi-profile shot. What you don't want, is a straight-on close up shot right upyour nose or a direct shot on your forehead. Then set up some nice lighting that is soft and doesn't hit you like a spotlight.
Avoid that Shiny Look
Remember that you are operating an artificially lighted environment in front of a camera, so remember to powder your face a bit an that goes for both men and women. Also men have to remember shave or they will look like Fred Flintstone on a camera.
Fix the Mess Behind You
Now turn around and take a look at what is behind you Look around and check your place. If it's a cluttered mess, you definitely want to straighten it up. Use your imagination and optimize on what you have to work with. How about setting up a big teddy bear or position an artificial plant somewhere else or display a vase of artificial flowers.
Believe None of What You Hear and Only Half of What You See
Finally, remember that flamers and nuisance are lurking in chat channels. Do not allow them to get into your skin. The best thing that you can do is learn to do a little B.S.ing of your own, because the best way to confront fire is by unleashing your own fire.
