Free Beginners Crochet Patterns
Warren Wong
When you first start crocheting the easiest way to have all the different sizes of hooks available is to purchase a kit that contains at least 10 needles of various sizes ranging from small to large. For beginners, crochet hooks are numbered and the lowest numbers are the smallest needles used for crocheting with fine crochet cotton, which is also called thread. The smaller the needle, the smaller the work will be and it is harder to see the stitches. When crocheting with wool, you need to use larger size hooks that have letters, rather than numbers to denote the needle sizes.
Many people have difficulty keeping track of their needles and the wool. Helpful tips that will prevent you from having them scattered all over the house include using toothbrush holders as storage containers for the needles and old coffee cans as storage areas for your wool. If you punch a hole in the cover of the container and pull the strand of wool through the hole, you won have the problem of your ball of wool rolling across the floor as you work. If you travel quite a bit, and want to take your crocheting along with you, a backpack is the perfect container for all your crocheting supplies. If you fly, you will have to pack this in the luggage that you check in because security will not permit you to take the crochet hooks on the plane with you.
If you are making a project that involves joining the beginning chain or foundation row to make a circle, one way of making sure that you know where a round begins is to use a bobby pin in the stitch. Use a contracting color od yarn, fold it through the bobby pin and each time you reach this point in your work, move the bobby pin up to the last stitch in the row you just finished. As you get used to crocheting and are able to follow the pattern easier, you will not have any difficulty knowing where each round ends and another begins.
There will be times when you have a project that you really want to complete, but with which you get frustrated. On times like this, why not take up an easier crocheting project that you can complete in very little time ?such as a dishcloth where you only have to crochet rows of single crochet. This will relieve the aggravation you feel with the other project and when you go back to it, you will find that things start to move along much better.
When you start using a new ball of wool, never start with the end that is showing. The result will be that as you use more and more wool, you will have one huge ball of tangles. This is because the starting point for the wool is actually in the middle of the ball. Dig into one end of the ball of wool and pull out the center. When you start using the end of the wool from the middle, you won have any tangles in the full ball.
