Good In French Language
M. Blanc
French is spoken in all the 5 continents and many countries prefer to speak French than any of the other language of the world. So if you want to become a French translator, you will be highly in demand as long as you understand more about the mechanisms of this rich and unique language.
The French language is not that difficult to learn but you must know the following:
The French language is very musical and pronouncing a word out loud can help you with the five different accents marks. If you know how to pronounce them, you will know how to write them correctly.
Many letters are silent (don't sound when spoken) and you must know how to recognize those words.
When learning a noun, you must learn if that noun is masculine or feminine as this will affect the whole sentence structure. The nouns can also be singular or plural and the feminine singular or plural form is different than the masculine singular/ plural one.
In English, the pronoun "you" can indicate either a singular or a plural form. In French "you" in the singular form is "tu, singular form" used only with family or close friends. "You" in the plural form is "vous" and is intended to show respect (to your boss, teacher etc) even if there is only one person and can be also used as a plural when addressing two members of your family.
French people love to use adverbs and in French, the adverbs can indicate a place, a duration, a quantity, a frequency, can be negative, interrogative etc. Knowing the difference between all those adverbs will help you in expressing yourself better
You should study to be proficient in one subject as many industries have a specific jargon. If you just know French as a whole, then you will have a hard time translating specific terms such as in the fashion world "patented leather" does not mean that the leather has a patent it means the leather has a varnish, "a central vent" means you have a central slit. Financial, legal, medical, technology terms can be very difficult to know unless you have spent times studying them. Words that we use everyday such as "business day, loan, mortgage, download" are completely different in French. They become " un jour ouvrable, un emprunt, une hypoth?que, un t'l'chargement.
The more languages you are fluent in, the easier it will be to learn French. Learning French the right way by immersing yourself in it will help you not only by thinking like a native but understanding the French culture as well. To practice your translator skills take a passage of a well known book or article originally written in French that was translated in English for example, translate it from English to French then compare it with the original document. The closer you are from the original translation, the more you are mastering the language.
