We're all concerned about the effect our energy usage is having on the earth and its atmosphere. But the good news is that there are plenty of things that you can do cut your energy usage around the home. What's more, these things won't cost you a penny to implement, but could lower your energy bills quite dramatically - so what are you waiting for!
Use energy saving light bulbs - When Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs first came on the market, they were hideously expensive, and produced a very un-natural green-blue light. Thankfully, nowadays they're cheap and plentiful, and come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, so there's no excuse not to use them. You can even get ones that work with dimmer switches!
Waste not want not - We know you've heard this before, but it bears repeating as it is such a simple energy saver, and it really make a difference. Whenever you leave a room turn out the light. It's as simple as that.
Opt for single, not multi-bulbs - Ask yourself if you really need a two or four-bulb light fitting. By replacing it with a single bulb fitting you'll save energy and money, and it's a cheap and simple improvement to make.
Standby at your peril - Appliances on standby are far from switched off. In fact, appliances on standby still use a substantial amount of energy while that little red light is on. As well as the tv, turn anything off at the mains which has a big transformer plug, or any kind of light on it, be it a timer, clock or little LED.
Cut those kitchen costs - Did you know that by simply reducing the temperature of your washing machine cycle, from 60 degrees to 40 degrees you could save up to a third of the electricity? And some washing powders are now available that can clean at temperatures of around 30 degrees, so you can turn your washing machine down even lower these days. If you have to use a tumble dryer, you'll save time and money by wringing out or spinning dry your clothes before tumble drying so they spend less time in the machine. Try not to use tumble dryers as these are very costly and energy heavy, hang your clothes outside or on a clothes horse instead wherever possible.
Shop for A grades - Many appiance producers are now battling to design the most energy efficient appliances yet. All new electrical appliances on sale now have an energy efficiency rating, which should be clearly visible in any store you visit. The cleanest products are graded A, so look out for this seal of approval.
