Alzheimer's And Parkinson's Disease
Speedy
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the central nervous
system. There are approximately 4 million patients across
the world suffering from this pitiable condition.
Tremor, rigidity of muscles, tiredness, depression,
difficulties with balance and handwriting, speech and facial
expression changes, difficulties with eating and swallowing
are some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Neupro is
the first approved treatment for this debilitating disease.
How Neupro works?
The levels of dopamine fall in the body after the age of 50
in most people due to Parkinson's disease.
The active ingredient in Neupro is rotigotine which belongs
to the class of medications called dopamine agonist.
Rotigotine in Neupro imitates the action of dopamine which
is found in the central nervous system and is responsible
for co-ordination and control of movements.
delivers a
measured dose of rotigotine over a period of 24 hours to
help maintain the necessary level of dopamine in the body
and thereby reduce the disconcerting effects of the disease.
Neupro clinical trials
The effectiveness of Neupro was demonstrated in one
fixed-dose response study and two flexible-dose studies.
Neupro was clinically tested in two parallel groups?
randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies
involved 1,154 patients with early Parkinson's who were not
on other anti-Parkinson's agents.
Patients on Neupro showed an immediate reduction in scores
on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) of
about seven points and after six months the score remained
four points below baseline.
Side effects of Neupro
Neupro is generally well tolerated. The most common side
effects of Neupro in clinical trials included patch-site
skin reactions, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and
insomnia. Other side effects of Neupro are narcolepsy-like
sleep attacks, hallucinations, and postural hypotension.
Apply Neupro patches at same time each day for best results.
