There are a number of places in your house at risk for mold, but the ones that have to put up with this problem the most are the kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, and the basement. Each one has sources of water damage and mold of its own to contend with, but the ways to deal with the problem in each of these rooms are similar to each other.

Try to keep any standing water or spills cleaned up as soon as they happen to try and keep the humidity in the space down. Humidity is one of the most common causes of mold growth, even though many people believe that mold is caused only by leaks and standing water. In the basement, the humidity problem can be reduced by installing a dehumidifier. These can also be used in other areas of the home, especially after a flood, to assist in reducing the humidity.

Another way to reduce humidity in the high risk rooms of your home is to have an exhaust fan installed in each of them. The heat from the washer and dryer in the laundry room, from the baths in the bathroom, and the cooking in the kitchen will be greatly reduced simply by having one of these items installed into the ceiling. They are not expensive and can be installed in less than a few hours in most cases.

Mold growth can be reduced in the kitchen and bathroom by making sure the floor is watertight and no water can get to the subfloor through cracks or missing areas of grout or caulking. This not only poses a problem concerning mold growth, but it can also rot the subflooring and the joists, eventually causing everything to fall through the floor.

One mold problem often seen in the laundry room and sometimes in clothes hampers all over the house is dry clothing being thrown in on top of wet clothing. You should always wash wet clothing as soon as you can instead of throwing it in the hamper and forgetting that it is there. Mold will start growing on it usually within about 48 hours and if the clothes are directly on the floor, this can spread to the wall or carpet.

Remind yourself that where there is moisture, there can be mold and you will be able to combat mold much better if you can keep that in mind.
