Guide To Playing Guitar
Dan Fletcher
It's relatively easy to win, as long as you watch for inverted cards. If you don't pay attention to the inversions, then you'll quickly find the game unplayable.
The aim of wave solitaire is to build 4 ascending suit sequences to the foundation stacks.
The game starts with 10 manoeuvre stacks, 4 foundation stacks, a talon, and a discard pile.
The cards in the manoeuvre zone are dealt out in a wave pattern, with 2 cards in the first stack, 5 in the next, then 2 again, etc. So the stacks are arranged like this...
2 5 2 5 2
5 2 5 2 5
The manoeuvre zone uses a similar rule to corona solitaire. A card can only be moved to a manoeuvre stack if it is one less in rank, and the same suit. For example, a 6 of spades can be moved onto a 7 of spades.
A card can be moved from the talon to the discard pile at any time. All cards in the discard pile are visible, but only the top card can be played.
You can move any card to the discard pile, as long as it is 1 more, or 1 less, in rank. For example, you can move any 4's or 6's onto a 5. This rule is the same rule used in the discard pile of golf solitaire.
When a manoeuvre column is empty, a card should be automatically moved from the discard pile. If the discard pile is empty, then a card is moved straight from the stock to fill the empty column.
To win wave solitaire, you will need to look for inversions. This is where two cards have the same suit, but the one with the lowest rank is below the higer ranked card.
This is best shown with an illustration.
Suppose a stack at the start of the game looks like this:
2 of Clubs.
8 of Clubs.
Normally, to remove the 8, you would first have to move the Ace of clubs to the 7 of clubs. But you can't remove the 2, because it wont be available until the 8 is moved. This means, sometime during the game, the 8 will have to be moved to the discard stack. You can do this any time a 9 or a 7 is at the top of the discard pile.
If you take notice of all inversions like this at the start of the game, and then work your way through them as you play, then you should have no problem winning wave solitaire.
