If you are on a diet and are serous about it, never go to the grocery store without a healthy diet shopping list. Planning is the most important part to grocery store shopping while you are dieting. If you are on a diet and you go shopping for food without a list you stand a chance of getting hypnotized by the grocery store music and wander over to the rows of cookies.
Your healthy diet shopping list will help you stick to the good foods; you know the foods that will not go to your hips. You can eat great and lose weight if you know what food you like that is not fattening. You will reach a point that you will need to exercise to lose weight so you need to eat well to keep up your energy.
Don't rush when you make your list, start the list the day before. Make your mind up what you need to cook and what ingredients you will need. You will be eating several smaller meals per day, so include all the meals in your diet plan. It is much better than pushing your cart from one aisle to the next and picking out what looks good to you. Being focused and sticking to your list will help you stay away from the ding dongs and ice cream.
It is always better for you to cook from scratch. It might take some extra time but not much if you are properly prepared. Keep an ongoing list so you can check off what you are short of. This makes it easy when you want to put a meal together, it will all be there. When you cook your own meals from scratch, you have control over what you put into your food, and it is much fresher, which always tastes better.
Don't buy foods with empty calories. Foods like chips, cookies, candy, soft drinks, etc give your body little if any nutrition, stay away. When you first start shopping for your weight loss grocery shopping trip, it might be a good idea to take along a diet buddy for support.
Read the labels. Look at the fat content, the sugar content, the salt content, and the extra ingredients like monosodium glutamate. Stay away from monosodium glutamate. Be sure that you buy diet friendly foods that you will be able to eat.
The frozen food section in many grocery stores has meals from Weight Watchers, Lean Cuisine and Amy's. Amy's has a Black Bean Enchilada that I have been eating for years, her pizzas are also good. This is good for when you do not have time or do not feel like cooking. You will need to count calories on your diet; with the frozen diet meals, this is easy because the calorie count is on the side of the box. Be careful of the sodium in frozen meals. That is one of the reasons I like Amy's, she does not use too much salt.
I need to say a little more about Amy's. For many years I have been a vegetarian and it has been difficult to find good organic, vegetarian frozen foods, that taste good. Amy's has over 88 frozen meals, including her famous vegetable pot pie, pizzas, pocket sandwiches, snacks and whole meals.
Stay away from most of the convenience foods. Even though they are easy to fix and taste good sometimes, these types of foods often contain additional calories, fats, and carbohydrates that you don't want. Don't forget to go through the newspapers and magazines for coupons and make a notation on your shopping list, this can save you a lot over time.
One last word of advice, eat before you go shopping. If you are hungry when you go to the grocery store, you will be more likely to buy things that you should not be in your kitchen.
