How To Train Hunting Dogs
Craig Chambers
Hunting dogs offer a unique hunting experience for those looking for something different. Out of all of the incredible hunting trips I have been on over the years, the times I have taken my hunting dogs have been the best and the most successful. I saw early on that if trained well, the dog will become loyal to you and become part of your family. Hunting with a skilled hunting dog is a great benefit to any hunting trip and offers a unique experience like no other.
Purchasing the best hunting dog for you is very important and requires a lot of thought and preparation. Since being comfortable with your dog is one of the biggest aspects required when choosing a hunting dog, it is important to spend as much time as possible with each other before purchasing. Owning a dog that you can rely on is a great benefit and often makes a difference in the outcome of the hunt.
Deciding on the best hunting dog is vital because you will be relying on his instinctive skills to help you while on the hunt. A good hunting dog aids the hunter on the hunt and knows how to follow commands and interpret his masters needs. There are different places to buy purebred hunting dogs, but I personally have had the best experience and recommend buying through a breeder to insure you get a quality dog.
You will benefit greatly by purchasing through a breeder. Breeders will be able to provide purebred documentations, allowing you to make an educated decision about the dog you are thinking about buying. Choosing a reputable breeder is necessary in purchasing the best dog. Always ask questions regarding their experience and consider the conditions of the kennel where the dog is kept. reputable breeders take care of their dogs and keep their kennels clean.
Another important part of choosing hunting dogs is how they will be trained. This is a very important area to consider and learn about before making a decision. Some hunters choose to train the dog themselves and although many are successful, it requires a great deal of patience and knowledge to train the dog correctly. Personally, I have always thought that hiring a professional has given me the best results and prepared my dogs adequately for the hunt.
Many times a dog becomes not only a tool and companion to the hunter, but also a family pet. When this occurs, it is easy for the lines of communication to become crossed, confusing the dog. Going through a professional trainer can help ease the confusion and teach a dog how to work with his owner. I also recommend putting a dog in obedience classes. This teaches them social skills and time to learn to get along with others.
When searching for the best hunting dog, you will come across a good selection of dogs to choose from. You should choose the dog based on the type of hunting you are interested in. Every type of dog comes with instinctive qualities making them a great choice for specific areas of hunting. Retrievers are a great dog for bringing back fallen ducks or geese if you will be hunting in water areas, whereas you will find a scent hound is better in tracking down game by smell.
Pointers as well as Terriers have other special qualities, making them suited for flushing out small animals. When hunting with a dog, you will see that the instinctive qualities of each of these types of dogs can be beneficial to the outcome of your hunt and provide you with more successful results. Choosing the right dog can be a challenge, but the benefits of using the time to look will pay off when you finally find the perfect hunting dog.
